  1. The Peritoneal Vac StudyInstructions for the ICU Nurse PI: Andrew Kirkpatrick pg # 02603 Derek Roberts pg# 02871 Corina Tiruta pg # 00521

  2. For each patient enrolled in the study, blood and peritoneal fluid will be collected in the ICU four 4 times. Use the kits stored in the lab space in the box labeled “Peritoneal Vac Study”. • Collection 1: - 24 hrs after the temporary abdominal dressing (TAC) is initiated (24 hrs after the OR procedure ends) -use the kit labelled with pt.id.001-2 for patient one, pt.id.002-2 for patient two, etc. • Collection 2: - 48 hours after TAC (48 hrs after the OR procedure ends) -use the kit labelled with pt.id.001-3 for patient one, pt.id.002-3 for patient two,etc.

Collection 3: - day 6 after TAC (144 hours after the OR procedure ends) -use the kit labelled with pt.id.001-4 for patient one, pt.id.002-4 for patient two • Collection 4: - day 26 after TAC or discharge, whichever comes first -use the kit labelled with pt.id.001-5 for patient one, pt.id.002-5 for patient two e.g. OR procedure ends at 2 am on Jan.1 -> Collection 1 will be done at 2 am on Jan.2, Collection 2 at 2 am on Jan.3, Collection 3 at 2 am on Jan. 7, Collection 4 at 2 am on Jan.28 (or hospital discharge)

  4. FOR EACH TIME POINT COLLECTION: 1. COLLECT PERITONEAL FLUID: • fill-up the 4ml green cap tube labelled “PF” with peritoneal fluid. 2. COLLECT BLOOD: • 2 Green Cap 4ml tubes for plasma isolation (labeled with a “P”) • 2 Red Cap 4ml tubes for serum isolation (labeled with a “S”) fill-up the tubes to 4ml and keep them on the rack provided in an upright position 3. Fill-out the pt. gender & DOB, collection date&time on the Research Requisition 4. Send the five (4ml) tubes, the rest of the bag (containing 3 empty blue cap 15ml tubes for CLS use only) and the Research Requisition to CLS by porter

STEP 1: Peritoneal Fluid Collection: Fill with Peritoneal Fluid PF STEP 2: Blood Collection: Fill with Blood from arterial line and keep upright in the rack P S S P STEP 3: Fill the requisition Fill-out the patient’s gender & D.O.B. and collection date and time on the research requisition (RR) STEP 4: Calgary Lab Services: Call a porter to have the five 4mls tubes + the RR and the rest of the bag deliver to CLS
