Questions from day one • Funding • €25 million funding announced on Thursday 30th November 2006 by Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin at the Launch of T4 - €13 million for Woodwork/Construction Studies rooms (€20k per room to bring equipment not covered under dust extraction or PPE up to H&S standards) - €2 million for Technology (€40k per approved schools approved) - €10 million for DCG • €70k has already been issued earlier this year to every Engineering room to bring them up to the highest H&S standards

  4. Funding for DCG • A total of €10 million allocated • Will follow a banded structure related to the average number of students sitting LC Technical Drawing over the last three years, 2004-2006 • Will facilitate one to one provision • Will include a margin for ancillaries • Will be in schools before Christmas Circular letters on use of these funds will issue from the DES shortly. Further advice will also be posted on www.t4.ie

Hardware and Software • Hardware • Will be provided through CMOD (ChangeManagement & Organisational Development) • Will offer same menu to all schools • Will avoid need for quotations etc • Technical Support provided • Software • Will be available after Christmas • Will be focus of round three

Overview of today • “The integration of topics and the interconnection between the elements of the core is a key emphasis” • “The purpose of the assignment is to provide a medium through which students can display their understanding of the communication of design” • “The assignment will focus on areas of the subject which cannot be readily assessed in a terminal examination, for example, freehand sketching and CAD”

Overview of today • “Sketching is now a key area of the subject and as such should be encouraged from an early stage to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary skills to confidently and competently approach their assignment” • “Students should also be encouraged to sketch the 3-dimensional solution to problems as a key to understanding the portrayal of the 2-dimensional solution”

Overview of today • “The use of multimedia presentations using an overhead projector and data projector should play a key role and this must be considered when equipping the room” • “The link between areas of the subject and objects and artefacts in the student’s environment should be established e.g. conics and satellite systems” • “The student assignment provides a means for students to express their creativity, to demonstrate their knowledge of CAD systems, freehand sketching and the graphics of Design and Communication”

  14. Integration of ICT “the use of digital media such as digital cameras and scanners should be encouraged as students investigate the aesthetic worth and design of objects. Students will have to complete their assignment which will necessitate the use of ICT. Their skills in its use must be built up throughout the course, not just prior to the completion of the student assignment”

  15. Conclusion “The production of the student assignment will provide very valuable exposure for the subject and teachers should use the student assignment to showcase the work that goes on in the subject”
