  2. Who are we? • BSAC (Bee SAC – much easier to say) is a volunteer citizen advisory committee that reports directly to Burlington City Council. • There are 10 members representing citizens, one Senior Centre representative, one Council representative and staff for support.

  3. What do we do? • Respond to our community’s older adults needs and concerns, in tandem with other related groups and stakeholders. • Provide a unified voice for older adults in Burlington, sharing information about current issues and emerging concerns. • Create and execute an annual work plan based on priorities identified by input from older adult groups, individuals and affiliates.

  4. So what does that mean? • In 2015 we created and sent out a seniors survey and found out that you: • Need new seniors program centers in east and west Burlington • Have concerns regarding transportation, affordable housing, and social isolation. • Didn’t know that we existed. • We developed a database of everyone in Burlington who can help seniors • We attended and spoke with many seniors at community events: • Health and Wellness Fair • Seniors Day

  5. In 2016 we are focusing onTRANSPORTATION • Exploring ways to financially ease public transportation for seniors • Recommended a free Monday bus ride for seniors but was turned down by Council • Working on other strategies - $1.00 every day; 15 minute wait

  6. More SOCIAL ACTIVITIES • Exploring ways to increase seniors activities in Aldershot and in the east end of Burlington • Here is what we found out: • Active Aldershot on Plains Road offers senior programs • The Seniors’ Centre offers additional programming at Tansley Woods • Grocery stores have free lunches for seniors

  7. AFFORDABLE HOUSING • The Region is implementing a pilot program to expand affordable housing for seniors: • Second Unit Pilot Program • Halton HomeShare

  8. Raising AWARENESS for BSAC • Attending community events • Participating in Seniors Month (June) • Connected with the Seniors’ Centre • Presenting at seniors’ residences and churches

  9. Tell you about other IMPORTANT ISSUES • Storage and access of personal medical information (for Paramedics) • Emergency preparedness • Submitting a nomination for the Ontario Senior Achievement Award
