  3. NOP • Normal • Operating • Procedures / or Plan

  4. NOP • Normal Operating Plan / procedures are about the day to day operation of the lifeguard team. • EXERCISE • In groups discuss what you think should be included in such a plan, write items for inclusion on post-its and stick them on to the poster sheet. You have 10 minutes for this task.

  5. NOP Should Contain(in outline) • Risk Factors • Supervision • Communication • Daily Routines and cover • Equipment and first aid checklist • Uniform

  6. NOP Should Contain(in outline) • Dealing with the public • Role in Emergency • Reporting • Emergency access points • Emergency provision • Review

  7. E.A.P • Emergency • Action • Plan

  8. E.A.P • What is an emergency? • An unexpected event which may result in a minor or major injury or other loss. • The E.A.P details how the lifeguard team will deal with any foreseeable emergency.

  9. E.A.P • Exercise • In groups discuss what you think should be included in such a plan, write items for inclusion on post-its and stick them on to the poster sheet. You have 10 minutes for this task.

  10. E.A.P What it should cover • Minor emergencies • Major emergencies • Land based emergencies

  11. E.A.P Minor emergencies • Minor first aid e.g. small cuts and bruises • Mild sunburn • Tired swimmers

  12. E.A.P Major emergencies • Lost children • Cardiac arrest or equivalent medical emergency • Casualty in water • Spinal injury

  13. E.A.P Land based emergencies • Assault • Violence • Alcohol/drug overdose • Theft • Lost person • Accident/illness

  14. E.A.P Instructions • The .E.A.P should contain instructions on managing all FORESEEABLE emergencies. • E.A.P should link with N.O.P on number function and location of lifeguards.

  15. Covering:- • Casualty in water • Injured bather • Multiple casualties in the water • Water and land based medical emergencies • First aid

  16. Covering:- • Lost people and children • Evacuation • Severe weather • Dangerous water conditions • Fire

  17. Summary • Patrol zone • Conduct assessment • Usage patterns • Maximum safety for the public • Lifeguard qualities, equipment and fitness.
