Basicinformation • Petrovanyis a village in Prešov District in the Prešov Region of eastern Slovakia • Borders: N-Veľká Stráž, Malá Stráž, Kapušiansky hradný vrch S-open basin E-Slanské pohorie W-Šarišská vrchovina, Čierna hora • It has a population of about 2000 people • Covers an area of 17.463km² • Petrovany is divided into three parts: 1. Petrovany 2. Močarmany 3. Vysielač

History • In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1304 • The village was built around the St. Peter's Church • Petrovany belongedto: a noblemen fromŠebastová (in the 15thcentury) Kenedyovci (in the 16th century) Forgáchovci (in the 17th century) Szirmayovci (in the 19th century) • Peopleworked in theforest or theywere a farmers • Jednotné roľnícke družstvo (JRD) wasfounded in 1949

Jozef “Jožko“ Príhoda • Popular folk singer • Hewasborn on 20th April 1930 • He performed at the National Theatre in Kosice afterhefinished high school • Jozef wrote many poems and songs • Heworked as a soloist in the PUĽS (Podduklianský ukrajinský ľudový súbor). He met hiswifethere. • Hewas one of the founders of folklore ensembles Šarišan • Songs: Ej, ftačkujarabačku, A od Prešova v tim poľu, Šumna ja dzivečka, A našemu starostovi, Oreśedlak na hureZaśpivamvamśpivanečku v čistej šariščine... • Jozef died in 1987
