  2.  Stress has become an inevitable part of life in today’s modern world.  Apart from causing anxiety disorders, panic attacks and sleep problems, stress can also affect your oral health in a number of ways.  Therefore, it is important to recognize and understand the main causes of stress and further take important steps to reduce it.

  3. ▪Here are some of the common effects of stress on oral health: ▪ ● Bruxism – Clenching or grinding is one of the biggest oral symptoms caused by stress. It can result in tooth damage, cracking or fracturing of your teeth and can further lead to a syndrome called TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). ▪ ● TMJ/TMD – The Temporomandibular joint is a joint that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull. When this joint is damaged or injured it can result in a disorder called Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome. Stress and anxiety are the main causes of a TMJ disorder. Common symptoms include pain or tenderness of your jaw, difficulty in chewing, and clicking and popping sound in the jaw joint. ▪ ● Canker Sores – Stress can lead to the development of canker sores. These are small, painful ulcers on the inside of the mouth, tongue, lips or throat. Most canker sores clear on their own in one to two weeks and symptoms may include pain, a burning sensation, and inflammation. ▪ ● Gum disease – Being under constant stress can affect your mood, interests, eating habits and cause you to skip your oral care routine i.e. brushing and flossing. If you indulge in constant snacking, and don’t take good care of your teeth and gums, then you can increase the chances of getting gum disease or periodontal disease. ▪ ● Tooth decay (cavities) – Tooth decay, also known as dental cavities, are permanently damaged areas on your teeth. The small holes are created when bacteria present in the plaque produces acid during the breakdown of sugar in your mouth. Stress can lead to daily hygiene neglect and increased craving for sugary foods and drinks, increasing your risk of getting cavities and tooth decay.
