  2. Why do we get hungry? • We feel hungry when our stomach is empty when out stomach contracts. • When our stomach feels full, we are not hungry. • Balloon Experiment:

  3. Biological Influences • Mid-hypothalamic centers in the brain monitoring appetite • Appetite hormones • Stomach cramps • Universal attraction to sweet and salty • Adaptive weariness to novel foods • Psychological Influences • Sight and smell of food • Variety of foods available • Memory of time elapsed since last meal • Mood Eating Behavior • Social-cultural influences: • Culturally learned taste preferences • Learned restraint in cultures idealizing thinness

  4. The Brain • Our brain helps us control our body chemistry and makes us feel hungry when we need to eat by releasing the hormone OREXIM • Hypothalamus has two parts: • Lateral Hypothalamus when stimulated causes the organism to eat. Destruction of this area, you wont want to eat therefore starve. • Ventromedial depresses hunger, stops eating. If destroyed you’ll eat forever • If function properly: BALANCE • Fat Rat

  5. Hormones • Insulin: hormones created by pancreas, controls blood glucose levels. • Leptin: proteins given off by fat cells when there is a lot of this hormone, the brain increases the metabolism. • Orexin: hormone that is triggered by the hypothalamus that makes you hungry. • Ghrelin: when your stomach is empty, it sends signals to your brain that you need food. • P.Y.Y: tells the brain when you’re not hungry.
