  1. Some Basic Interior Design Principles for First-Timers Interior design is a fascinating field and though we all have decorated our houses at some point in time or other, the professional field is an entirely different ball game. It’s a lot more than just painting the walls and buying face furniture. It also includes things like how to make a space liveable and aesthetically pleasing as well as space planning, vendor management, quality checks, hiring the right kind of people, execution and delivery, etc. It’s as much about the technicalities as it is about instinct and good taste. If you’re a beginner in this field and are confused about where to start, here are some basic principles that should be second nature to interior designers and are a time-tested guide to designing stellar interiors: 1.Balance In interior design, balance is about creating a visual balance and equilibrium for anyone who views the space. The dictionary definition of balance to an even distribution of weight. This can be achieved by distributing the elements in a room evenly around the room. The visual weight should balance no matter which corner you look in. There are three types of balance: radial, symmetrical and asymmetrical. Radial is something observed in living room interiors, where the sofas and the centerpiece act as the center of the circle from which all other elements spread gradually across the room. Asymmetrical balance is spontaneous and dynamic with an imaginary focal point whereas in symmetrical balance, the two halves of the room are equally deigned and decorated, common in modern office 2.Emphasis and Focus This principle is all about creating a focal point in the space. The focal point is of particular importance and emphasized in the area. Most interior home decor ideas suggest that you place a focal point in the room. This could be a piece of art, an accent wall, a photo wall or a specific kind of light. These are several ways in which emphasis can be put on certain aspects of the room. Light and color or powerful elements very commonly used to this end. 3.Contrast Contrast is basically a specific color or light which separates one element from the rest. Common examples are black and white, yellow and navy blue, beige and brown and numerous others. Contrast at a sense of drama to the room and makes it more interesting. Contrasting elements are the most common way to create a focal point in the room. In most cases, color is the element used to exercise contrast. However, other elements like size, light, and shape can also be used. 4.Unity The goal of all interior design is to achieve an overall harmonious space. Unity and harmony bring together all the principles of interior design because they are the ultimate goal. This includes consistency beard in color, shape, size, etc and a sense of everything coming together and complementing each other. The space is more than the sum of its parts. 5.Rhythm and Repetition Also known as movement, rhythm is to create a button or sense of movement in the room. This is generally achieved by repetitive use of specific elements which registers subconsciously and give an overall unifying experience. This may be done through the use of specific materials like wood, or use of specific shapes or lighting or colors. This use is subtle and therefore hard to attain. 6.Scale and Proportions This is very often an underestimated principle and generally not the first one that comes to mind. However, it is crucial to the overall look of the place. If you get furniture that's one size too big for interiors.

  2. the room, the room is just going to look awkward and overfilled. On the other hand, if the accessories are too small, the room will look empty. Just like balance, scale and proportion are all about the visual perception of things. This is why it's very important to measure the space before buying any new furniture. In this way, you know your limits of what you want to place. It's also important to make sure that the comparative sizes of things match up in the perfect way because we generally judge by comparison. 7.Details Last but not least is the attention to detail. Since all of the other principles refer to the larger picture, we can forget that it's all in the details. This may be small things like the trimmings of a curtain or the intricate picture frames you've hung on the wall or doorknobs but once noticed they add a specific charm to the place and make it memorable. This can even be the color of specific lampshades or the color windowsills or the detailing on a door in luxury house interiors. It’s these small things that are delightful to discover and are forever cherished. With these principles in hand, you can’t go wrong with designing the perfect place to stay or modern office interiors. But remember, practice leads to perfection!
