  1. Unit III: Lesson I Slow Way HomeVocabulary AssessmentPart I Milinda Jay, Ph. D

  2. Read aloud • Slow Way Home, chapter 9

  3. Create your own vocabulary list • As you listen to the read aloud, jot down any unfamiliar words

  4. Teamwork • Students number off 1-8 • Now, you have 8 teams. • Sit with your team.

  5. Your team number is your Chapter • Each team will take a chapter of the book, 1-8, corresponding with your team number

  6. Make a list • Go through each chapter and make a list of any words that are unfamiliar to your group, or that may be unfamiliar or difficult for other members of your class

  7. Write the sentence • Have one member of the group write out the sentence from the book in which the word is found

  8. Define the word • Have another member of your group write the dictionary definition as your group finds the word in a dictionary and reads aloud the definition.

  9. Create a Master List on your Teacher’s Computer • Each group take turns going to the teacher’s computer and typing in your vocabulary words, with definitions and sentences.

  10. Think of a way to teach • While one group member is typing, the rest of the group plans a strategy for teaching the words and definitions to the rest of class so that they can remember them.

  11. Beginning with Group 1, Chapter I • Each group takes turns teaching their definitions to the class.

  12. Game time! • Have students sit with their group members. • Judge’s Table: Choose one judge from each group to take their group’s list of words and definitions to the judge’s table. When one of their words is used in a round of play, that judge will determine if the definition is correct, and the sentence appropriate. The judges as a group will decide which group banged first. The judges will also keep up with the scoring as a group. • Teacher will flash one of the vocabulary words up on a screen, or show a card up with the word on it and say the word • The first group ready to define the word and use it in a sentence will bang a book on their desk. The group of judges will determine who banged first. • One member of the group who banged first will then define their word and use it in a sentence. • After the judges have determined if the definition and sentence is accurate the teacher will move on to the next word. Teacher moves on even if the definition was wrong, but she keeps that word in the pile to be used in another round. • When all the words have been defined correctly, judges tally the scores and name the team winner.

  13. Teacher • Your students have provided you with a test bank of vocabulary words, definitions and sentences. Use this test bank to make a multiple choice, matching or fill in the blank test to be given to students tomorrow.

  14. Homework • Study for tomorrow’s test!
