  1. CO2 emissions and climate change – How to work with sustainability Alex E Olsen Group Project Manager – Sustainable Production

  2. Conclusions! • Focus on the positive message – fish is ”climate friendly” and healthy. • LCA is a tool to identify issues / hotspots • Avoid discussions about how to calculate emissions! • Do will have to focus on CO2 emission only? Why not focus on eco systems?

  3. Facts about Espersen • Established 1937 • A leader in the processing of frozen seafood products • Turnover approx. 270 million Euro • More than 1,450 employees in Europe • Strong partnerships with customers, suppliers and employees • Production in Europe and Asia • Head office in Rønne on the island of Bornholm Director J.P.A. Espersen and wife, Mrs. Dagny Espersen’s Foundation is the owner of A. Espersen A/S. The main purpose of the foundation is to invest in A. Espersen A/S and to support various humanitarian purposes .

  4. Locations and Supply in Europe • Bornholm in the Baltic Sea • Fredericia and Hirtshals, Jutland, Denmark • Koszalin, Poland • Klaipeda, Lithuania

  5. Espersen’s Policy • Responsible fish sourcing • Energy and Climate(reduced carbon footprint) • Water; improved resource management. • Waste management • Transport miles

  6. We have to deal with CO2 emissions and other issues • Lack of Intergovernmental Leadership • Policy Commitment & MCS risks • Sector Confidence/Reputational issues Lack of internationally agreed standards • Resource Risk • Ecosystem Impact • Socio-Economic Risks FISHERIES VACUUM Courtesy of Birds Eye Iglo

  7. Why look at CO2 emissions • First .. It was driven by food miles agenda • Small group of interested processors • Driven by risk assessment • Very quick study looking for hotspots in the supply chain Courtesy of Sea Fish

  8. Data notes: 1. FAO may overestimate fleet size, which would inflate consumption. 2. Emissions at sea may have greater “weight” than terrestrial sources for acidification. 3. Tyedmers et al estimate of fuel consumed by fisheries is ~2.4x larger than FAO’s estimate. Courtesy of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership

  9. Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture & Fisheries (October 2009) (AU)

  10. Friederike Ziegler (February 2008) “Fish from Norway or New Zealand on Swedish plates?

  11. Key Areas • Gear (increased selectivity, less discards and less energy consumption) • Pelagic doors • Stronger and thinner twine • Better selectivity in bag • Thinner  warps and wires as a consequence of lower drag • Traceability • Use of existing e-logbook • Use of boxes with tags

  12. Energy Usage Espersen Group

  13. The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. Winston Churchill Thank you for your time!
