  1. Conservation and Interdependence SOL 3.10

  2. Interdependency • What does interdependent mean? • When plants and animals depend on one another and the land for survival.

  3. Interdependency • What are some example of how plants and animals depend on each other? (Turn and Talk) • Did you say? • Animals eat plants • Plants give us oxygen • Plants use soil to grow • Review video: Food Chains https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pasB5FxhVUk • Review page 2 in notebook

  4. Think about it….https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ07DcGGmMg • What happens to plants and animals when the environment is damaged?

  5. How can environments be damaged? Make a web on your white board Did you say? • Pollution • Cutting down trees • Digging for fossil fuels • Erosion • Drought • Disease • Natural Disasters

  6. Pollution

  7. Pollution

  8. Pollution • Wall-e 1 minute clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDoo_WXhA2c

  9. Oil Spills

  10. Deforestation

  11. Fossil Fuels • One Man’s Opinion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfVjl8wijvk

  12. Erosion

  13. Drought

  14. Disease

  15. Natural Disasters

  16. Natural Disasters • What are some natural disasters? • Volcanoes • Earthquakes • Fires • Floods • Erosion

  17. Videos • Natural Disasters- News footage stop at 5:40 • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfmRf8iOBkI • Bill Nye Volcanoes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7OTVUY_PdQ • Bill Nye Earthquakes • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l79IAk51Yy4

  18. Volcanoes An eruption happens when hot magma reaches the surface • Destroy the animals that don’t flee • Destroys the plants • Volcano i movie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqtL436KKdI • Are they helpful? • They can form islands (HAWAII) • They leave very rich soil

  19. Earthquakes • Earthquakes mostly damage homes and buildings

  20. Earthquakes • Can also damage animals and plants! • Downed power lines can injury animals. • Fallen trees can crush animal homes.

  21. Fires • How do fires impact plants and animals?

  22. Fires • Damage environment and land by destroying animals homes and plant life • Animals can be killed and forced to move. Can fire be helpful? • Dead land can be burned down and healthier growth returns

  23. Floods • People, animals and homes are destroyed by floods • Animals can often survive

  24. Erosion • Natural event caused by wind or water • Removes the soil in an area • Plants need this soil to live

  25. Disease • Animals and plants can get sick just like us! • What would happen if a certain type of animal got sick? • Impacts the food chain!

  26. Pollution • Pollution can also destroy land and water. • Water pollution impacts animals, plants and us! • Thank about the food chain!

  27. Water Pollution Can you name each type of water pollution?

  28. Conservation

  29. Conservation • How can we preserve the earth and natural resources? • Reduce, reuse, recycle • Resource renewal • Species Monitoring • Habitat Monitoring

  30. Resource Renewal • When species of plants and animals are protected • You can help renew the resource. • For example if a plant is endangered, you grow the seeds in an indoor, protected environment and then return them outside.

  31. Species Monitoring • When you monitor or watch over a group of animals (a species) • Scientists may count or track the species to see if the population is growing. • How can this practice help hedgehogs? • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0seTADKBwQ

  32. Habitat Management • Protects habitats of plants and animals • For example people build national parks where people can not hunt, build or collect plants and animals.

  33. National Parks

  34. Reduce • How can we reduce our use of natural resources? • What can we reduce ways we use water? • Make a web on your white board!

  35. Reduce Did you say? • Turn off faucets • Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth. • Take shorter showers • Wash only full loads in your washing machine • Water your yard early in the morning to prevent evaporation

  36. Reuse • What are some examples of reusing? • or

  37. Reuse • or

  40. Reuse • or

  41. Recycle • What can we recycle? • Plastics, Metals, Paper, Electronics • Recycling Plant https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOpGhAdQFEY
