  2. The Reading Matthew 26:69-75

  3. Can You?

  4. Matthew 14:22-33 Can You Walk On Water?

  5. Can You Walk On Water? Matthew 14:22-33 (NKJV) 22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary. 25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.

  6. Can You Walk On Water? Matthew 14:22-33 (NKJV) 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." 28 And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." 29 So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

  7. Can You Walk On Water? Matthew 14:22-33 (NKJV) 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!" 31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "Truly You are the Son of God."

  8. Can You Walk On Water? Matthew 14:29 (NKJV) 29 So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

  9. Can You Walk On Water? Literally – NO – because the command was to Peter and NOT TO US! Figuratively – YES – We can accomplish anything Jesus has Commanded us to do!

  10. Why Did Peter Begin To Sink? Not Because • He Lacked Faith In Jesus’ Power! – (28) • He Lacked Interest & Effort – (28) • He Acted Presumptuously – (28,29) • The Instructions Of The Lord “COULD NOT” Be Carried Out – (29) 28 And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." • 29 So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.

  11. Why Did Peter Begin To Sink? Because He Took His Eyes Off Jesus – (30) “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous,” • He was distracted by the storm – he began to notice what was going on around him instead of focusing on Jesus • Distraction is a tool often used by Satan

  12. Why Do We Begin To Sink? Because We Take Our Eyes Off Jesus! Matthew 13:22 (NKJV) 22  Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. Matthew 6:25 (NKJV) 25  "Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 13:20-21 (NKJV) 20  But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21  yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. • We can easily be distracted by: • Being anxious, or overly concerned for our material needs - Mat 6:25-33 • The hardships we have been called to endure - Mat 13:20-21 • Allowing material things to consume our time and efforts – Mat 13:22

  13. Why Do We Begin To Sink? Ephesians 4:28 (NKJV) 28  Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. Hebrews 10:35-39 35  Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. 36  For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: 37 "For yet a little while,And He who is coming will come and will not tarry.38 Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back,My soul has no pleasure in him."39  But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. Because We Take Our Eyes Off Jesus! 1 Corinthians 15:33 33  Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." Ephesians 4:14 (NKJV) 14  that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, Numbers 13:30-31 (NKJV) 30  Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." 31  But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." Genesis 3:1-3 (NKJV) 1  Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?" 2  And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3  but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' " Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV) 13  Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14  I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. • We can easily be distracted by: • Temptations – (Gen 3:1-3) • Problems – (Num. 13:30-31) • Our Past – (Phili 3:13,14) • Our Work – (Eph 4:28) • Our Burdens - (Heb 10:35-39) • Relationships – (1 Cor. 15:33) • False Teachers – (Eph 4:14)

  14. We Do Not Have To Sink! We Need To Keep Our Mind On Jesus! Hebrews 12:2-3 (NKJV) 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

  15. We Do Not Have To Sink! We Need To Keep Our Mind On Jesus! • Upon Our Lord, Jesus Christ – 1 Pet 2:21 • Upon The Words of Christ – Luke 21:33 • Upon Our Blessings – Eph1:3 • Upon God’s Promises – Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:9. 1 John 1:9 (NKJV) 9  If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Ephesians 1:3 (NKJV) 3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, Luke 21:33 (NKJV) 33  Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. 1 Peter 2:21 (NKJV) 21  For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

  16. Why Did Peter Begin To Sink? Fear Overpowered Peter’s Faith – (30) “But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid;” • What seemed so sure to Peter “INSIDE” the boat became a frightening experience “OUTSIDE” the boat! - • When buffeted by the wind he began to doubt then panicked! • Fear gripped Peter again – Mat 26:33,69-75; Gal. 2:11,12

  17. Why Do We Begin To Sink? Our Faith Can Be Overpowered By Fear Hebrews 13:5-6 (NKJV) 5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you."6  So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper;I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Hebrews 12:12 (NKJV) 12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, • Faith Is Easier professed than practiced – James 2:14,24 • Fear is the result of doubt – Mat 14:31; James 1:6-8 • Do Not Let Fear Destroy Your Faith – Rev. 2:10; 21:8 • Faith needs to be made strong – Luke 17:5; Heb. 12:12; 13:5,6; Rom. 10:17 Luke 17:5 (NKJV) 5  And the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." Revelation 2:10 (NKJV) 10  Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. James 2:14-24 (NKJV) 14  What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 24  You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Matthew 14:31 (NKJV) 31  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"

  18. Why Did Peter Begin To Sink? Because • He Was Distracted By The Storm And Took His Eyes Off Jesus – (30) • He Doubted What He Could Do With The Lord and Feared – (30) • When His Faith Sank, He sank -(30)

  19. Can You Walk On Water? • Had the faith to get out of the boat (29) • Walked on Water (29) • Began to Sink – (30) • Cried out “Lord save me!” - (30) • Jesus SAVED HIM! (32) Peter

  20. Signs That You May Be Beginning To Sink • A loosening of morals • A creeping disinterest in worship and associating w/ other Christians • Backsliding into practices you confessed were wrong • Good news: If we are slipping there is a way to fix it
