  10. Opening Activity • Look over your “Price is Right” notes and answer the following question: • Which caloric intake for a fast food item were you most surprised by? Explain your reasons. • Do you think fast food can ever be healthy? Why or why not? • Extra Credit opportunity!

  11. Create a cause and effect chart for FRENCH FRIES!

SQ2PRS (Survey, Question, Predict, Read, Respond, Summarize) • Survey: Preview a section of text in a short time span (60 seconds). • Question: List with a partner or small group 1-3 questions you think we’ll find the answers to when we read. • Predict: State 1-3 things we can expect to learn while reading. Narrow from the list of generated questions. • Read: With a partner or small group, read assigned section of text. While reading, look for answers to questions. • Respond: Try to answer questions. Modify, drop or add more questions (interacting with text as good readers do). • Summarize:  At end of text (orally/writing).

SURVEY…quickly jot down responses for each • What do the titles tell you about the authors’ positions on who is responsible for America’s growing weight problem? • What do you think is the purpose of their articles? • “Portion Distortion” was published in The Sacramento Bee and “If You Pitch It” was published in The New York Times. How do you think they might be the same? Different? Do you think they will be equally reliable? • What else can you tell about the articles just by looking at them?

  14. Question • Reword the titles and subtitles and turn them into questions to answer after the reading.

  15. Predict…write answers in journal • What’s the point of a comparison between burgers, fries, and cigarettes? What arguments do you think will be made? • Read the first 3 and last paragraphs of Barboza. Who does Barboza think is responsible for America’s growing weight problem? What arguments do you think he is going to make? • Who is the intended audience for these articles? How do you know that? • What information and ideas are they likely to draw on to convince you of their positions?

Summarize • Summarize “Portion Distortion” • Requirements: • Author’s name and title of article, in quotation marks, is in the first sentence • First sentence clearly states the main idea of the article • Include all important ideas or supporting points from the article • Use your own words • Keep your personal opinion out!

  19. Homework • Reading Log & IRP • Finish the reading and annotation of “Portion Distortion”. • Summarize the article. • EXTRA CREDIT!!

  20. Quickwrite • What is meant by the following quote? Use the appeals, ethos, pathos and logos, in your response. • "If you can fake sincerity, you've got it made." • Do you agree or disagree with the quote? Why?

  21. John Kotter: "People change what they do less because they are given analysis that shifts their thinking than because they are shown a truth that influences their feelings. In other words, if you want to motivate people to alter the way they do things, you can't just rely on numbers, charts and reports" -- logos! -- "to convince them that change is necessary. You have to speak to their emotions."

  22. One of the many, many failures of our educational system is that it teaches people little or nothing about epistemology. Their heads are a mash-up of scientific method, superstition, credulity, authority, assumptions. . . They cannot explain why they believe what they believe. They cannot explain why one thing is false and another is true.So of course they are swept this way and that by ethos, pathos, logic. The result? Most people's heads are full of rice pudding.
