This presentation explores the experiences of established researchers in teacher education, analyzing effective strategies for institutional research capacity building. It also examines the relevance of these findings to research capacity building in higher education teacher education programs.

On Learning from the Research Successful: aims Aims: • to explore the experiences of established researchers and the socio-cultural factors which support their development in teacher education; • to analyse, from the perspectives of these successful researchers, effective strategies for institutional research-capacity building; • and to analyse the relevance of these findings to research capacity building in HE teacher education programmes.

On Learning from the Research Successful: research design Research tools: email questionnaire & interviews Purposive sample: inclusion criteria: 1. went through their research apprenticeships as part-time and mature students, juggling full-time work teaching on ITE courses in Schools of Education; 2. now judged to be established or ‘successful’ researchers. a non-coercive request to participate in the study and an email questionnaire to 136 individuals; 77 responses

On Learning from the Research Successful : advice • Forge a supportive network of like minded people • Find strong mentors and stick them to you like glue • ‘Avoid at all costs the prevalent work ethic that demands an excess of your time and presence for clerical and managerial tasks and rewards you only with guilt!
