  2. What is a WellnessPolicy? • Can create equity among all schools, for all students within a school district A written document that guides school district efforts to support health, wellness, and academic success for all New Mexico students

  3. WHY DOES IT MATTER?

  5. Student Health Advisory Council SHAC • Requirements: • Representative of the school community • Meets at least twice a year • Reviews, revises and ensures implementation • Food service staff from director to members from site teams • Become familiar with all Wellness Policy aspects

Motivate Students to Maintain Their Health • Section III: Health Education • Students receive nutrition messages – Facebook, Twitter, Website, Digital Boards, District Newsletter • Promote adequate nutrient intake – Menus • Encourage staff to model healthy eating habits around students • Student Council – Read labels, meal planning, analyze media, technology that factor into health

THE SMARTER LUNCHROOMS MOVEMENT The Smarter Lunchrooms Movement is dedicated to providing schools with the knowledge, motivation, and resources needed to build lunchroom environments that make healthy food choices the easy choice. Brings evidence from the fields of economics, marketing, and psychology into the school cafeteria.   Smarter Lunchrooms strategies are free or low-cost solutions that nudge students to voluntarily select the healthiest food in the lunchroom.  Smarter Lunchrooms can see less waste, higher participation, more satisfied students, and increased consumption of important nutrient-rich foods.

  12. Movement for Fitness and Health • Section IV: Physical Activity • Recess before lunch • Access to water • Prohibit withholding physical activity (e.g, physical education, recess, etc.) as a means/method of punishment • Encourage outside school facilities during school hours

Roswell Independent School District Roswell, NM $6,000 Military Heights Elementary Color run with pledges and donations To fund: playground equipment and a walking track. $7,000+ $6,000 Del Norte Elementary Walking Wednesday with pledges and donations To fund: climbing wall and PE supplies Exemplary RISD Policy Language: Encourage the use of non-food fundraisers, and encourage those promoting physical activity, such as walk-a-thons, jump rope for heart, fun runs, etc. Berrendo Elementary Color run with pledges and donations To fund: teacher and student supplies
