  6. Marrakesh is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. It is located west of the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, 240 km south of Casablanca. The region has been inhabited by Berber farmers since the Neolithic. The city was founded in 1070 by Emir Abu Bakr ibn Umar as the imperial capital of the Almoravid Empire. The city's red walls built by Ali ibn Yusuf in the 12th century and other buildings built later from red sandstone gave the city the nickname "The Red City". It became the cultural, religious and commercial center of the Maghreb. Marrakech includes an old walled city full of vendors and their stalls. This Medina district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marrakech has the largest traditional market (souk) in Morocco and Jemaa el-Fnaa is the busiest square in Africa. Marrakech es una de las cuatro ciudades imperiales de Marruecos. Se encuentra al oeste de las estribaciones de las montañas del Atlas, a 240 km al sur de Casablanca. La región ha estado habitada por agricultores bereberes desde el Neolítico. La ciudad fue fundada en 1070 por el Emir Abu Bakr ibn Umar como capital imperial del Imperio Almorávide. Las murallas rojas de la ciudad construidas por Ali ibn Yusuf en el siglo XII y otros edificios construidos más tarde con arenisca roja le dieron a la ciudad el apodo de "La Ciudad Roja". Mesto založil v roku 1070 emir Abu Bakr ibn Umar ako cisárske hlavné mesto Almoravidskej ríše. Červené hradby mesta, ktoré postavil Ali ibn Yusuf v 12. storočí a ďalšie budovy postavené neskôr z červeného pieskovca dali mestu prezývku „Červené mesto“. Stalo sa kultúrnym, náboženským a obchodným centrom Maghrebu. Marakéš zahŕňa staré opevnené mesto plné predajcov a ich stánkov. Táto štvrť Medina je súčasťou svetového dedičstva UNESCO. Marakéš má najväčší tradičný trh (souk) v Maroku a Jemaa el-Fnaa je najrušnejšie námestie v Afrike.
