Introduction to AVU • APan African Institution • An Intergovernmental Organization established by charter • 14 Countries have signed charter • MOU with African Union Commission, support AUC in the area of eLearning • Supported by leading African institutions like the African Development Bank as well as state members • Established in 1997 as a project • Headquarters moved to Kenya in 2000

Uniqueness of AVU • Mandate of significantly increasing access to quality higher education and training through the innovative use of information communication technology • Working beyond technological, language and cultural barriers in Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone Africa • Large eLearning network- 53 partners- 27 countries • Contributed in trained + 43, 000  • Capacity to assist institutions and countries • Find more http://www.avu.org/About-AVU/introduction.html

  5. AVU Locations • Headquaters Nairobi Kenya • Regional Office Dakar Senegal • AVU has Host country agreements with both governments and is established as diplomatic mission in two countries

Access to HE in sub-Saharan Africa • 6% have access to HE • Young population, majority under 20 • Paradox: HE institutions not able to enroll all first year applicants • Solution: expand universities? New institutions? But not enough resources! • Open , distance and eLearning (Odel) is an alternative • ODeL can be used for education & training focus on skills

AVU Multinational Project II • Objectives • The development objective of the project is to contribute to increase Higher Education • access through quality ICT assisted education • and training in 27 institutions in 21 African countries • Strengthening cross-border collaboration and regional integration
