  8. CHILD Doing well in the PSLE is for self and not for parents. SET OWN TARGET

CHILD - Develop a SMART strategy for goal setting Questions to ask oneself : • Specific - What specifically do I intend to achieve? • Measurable - How do I know when I have achieved them ? • Achievable - Are my goals achievable? • Realistic - Are my goals realistic ? • Time frame - When will I have to accomplish it ?

  11. CHILD –NO LIMIT What does he want ? How can he accomplish it ? Action plan ?

  12. CHILD If he does not believe he can do it, nothing will get done. GET GOING

  14. CHILD What must he do now ? Draw up a time table with time frame - be realistic - break time ? Take some time to look back how was his time spent the day before / over weekend.

  23. PARENTS – INSPIRING Be positive • Talk about narrowing gaps instead of failures • Look at improvement – tangible and intangible • Acknowledge strengths and effort • Come up with strategies to help

  24. Tips to Help your child If you are disappointed with your child’s result : • Work through your disappointment before you talk to your child. This will ensure that you don't vent your anger / frustration on him / her. • Attend to your child's feelings. Tell him that you know he /she is disappointed too. • Share with him real life examples of failure and emphasize the importance of learning from mistakes. • Engage your child to move on, set targets and actions again, after he has worked through his disappointment.

  25. Tips to Help your child Children sometimes mask their sadness and disappointment with a "can't-be bothered" attitude. So you shouldn't judge them before you talk with them. Sometimes children seem to “rebel” by not doing work or appear lazy. That could be a real possibility that they do not know how to do the work. Children can be stressed too. Their coping mechanism may be limited. They need help to cope. Find out what can trigger off your child’s motivation.
