The Industry • 545 Regionals and Short Lines • Transport over 9 million railcars and almost 2 million trailers and containers • Haul across all business segments and all traffic classes • Operate in 49 States • Operate over 46K miles – 1/3rd of US total • 19688 Employees – 11% of industry Short Line Panel

  3. The Numbers • Before 1900, 47 short lines existed • Post deregulation in 1980, a Surge • 1980’s 153 short lines created • 1990’s 179 more short lines created • 2000’s 46 more created thru 2002 • 69% of all existing short lines were created after 1980 Short Line Panel

  5. Compared to Trucking: • 564,699 trucking companies • 95% operate < 20 trucks • BUT, they don’t need the bigger truckers to serve their customers’ needs Short Line Panel
