  3. God of the Underworld • 3 brothers cast lots – Hades got Underworld • God of wealth • Mysterious, stern, cold • Helmet of invisibility

  4. The Underworld • Under the earth • Traveled there across rivers after death • Guarded by Cerberus • Miserable, terrifying, shadowed • People punished for sins in life • Inhabited by Furies, Hecate, judges

  5. Myth of Persephone • Narcissus flower • Permission from Zeus for marriage • Taken by Hades under the earth

  6. Myth of Persephone • Taken to Underworld • Refused to marry Hades • Longed for mother • No food

  7. Demeter, Mother of Persephone • Goddess of harvest, fertility • Desperate to find daughter, crops failed • Persephone accepted seeds • Demeter found daughter – Helios and Hecate’s aid

  8. Resolution • Demeter angry with Zeus for approval • Zeus made final decision • Hades half the year (fall, winter) • Demeter second half (spring, summer)

  9. In Conclusion… • Significant god • Expansive domain • Main 3 gods • Ruled over peoples’ afterlife beneath world • Respected and appeased
