  1. Friends of Oriole Park Presentation To OPNG Town Hall Meeting VISION FOR THE EXPANSION AND IMPROVEMENT OF ORIOLE PARK June 22, 2011 Toronto, Ontario

  2. Friends of Oriole Park Why the TTC? because we need them; and because they need us.

  3. Friends of Oriole Park Our Vision:To expand Oriole Park by incorporation of a modest portion of the adjacent Davisville Yard site as part of a community based program to improve the Park and surrounding areas. Fundamental Considerations: • Community need for increased parkland and green spaces – Deer Park only has 1/1oth City-average parkland space • Revitalized Oriole Park will help revitalize neighbourhood including the Yonge-Davisville area • November 17, 2009 TTC Yard Study – limited future for Davisville Yards

  4. Friends of Oriole Park • From David Harvey: Canadians ranked public green spaces as most important factor contributing to quality of life . Parks were ranked more important than local services, community engagement, employment opportunities, or the arts : • Half of people in Toronto visit a park at least once a week and 14% visit a park every day. • Better parks offer host of benefits to Toronto’s residents, businesses, and government. These parks play a crucial role in our highly diverse city: • Successful parks increase value of nearby residential and commercial properties. • Access to good parks is important quality-of-life consideration when businesses or individuals are deciding whether to locate in a region. • Great public parks can be focal points for bringing communities together.

  5. Friends of Oriole Park Oriole Park: • Oriole Park is our only major community park • Small park (5.17 acres) heavily used, central part has seasonal limitations • FOP web site and affiliation with new City-wide “Friends of …” and “ParkPeople” networks has provided powerful new tool for consultation on Park issues Context: • City avg. 4.54 acres parkland per 1,000 residents • Deer Park community 0.47 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. • Deer Park has 1/10th City-average parkland • New $1.4M playground will attract more park users and has absorbed previous “open” park green space • Only option to increase Oriole Park is via adjacent Davisville Yards

  6. Friends of Oriole Park • Are We Falling Behind In The Upgrading Of Key Intersections Along The Yonge Street Corridor ? Compared to other key inter-sections on Yonge like Bloor Street; Davisville is drab. Key reason for this is the need to revitalize the“Davisville Yard Study”

  7. Friends of Oriole Park TTC Yard Study (2009): • Sheds insights into future of Davisville Yards: • Yards have “unique operational constraints” • “Designed for 2 car pairs not 6 car Toronto Rocket trains” • “Number of cars stored/cleaned overnight will be reduced” • Future use “primarily for storage/maintenance of non-revenue fleet” • Financial cost/benefit analyses shows no significant difference between keeping Davisville Yards and a new yard. • Limited future role of Davisville Yards opens door to consider alternative uses (this is being addressed in a new TTC Study)

  8. Friends of Oriole Park Our Proposal: • Incorporation of approx. 2 acres of TTC Lands into Oriole Park • Much of these 2 acres used primarily for parking and temporary storage • 2 acres is approx 20% of TTC Lands • Would increase Oriole Park 40% and increase space for general park users 140% • TTC Lands could encompass garden plots,coffee- food concession, BBQ pits, community programs, Farmer’s Market etc. Detailed plans for 2 acres would be developed via public input and formal participation (OPNG). • For more info see: www.friendsoforiolepark.com

  9. Friends of Oriole Park The Way Forward: • In December 2010 FOP submitted Deputation to TTC. • On Feb 2, 2011, after public presentation, TTC Board passed resolution directing TTC staff to meet with FOP to discuss future plans for Davisville Yards. • In late 2010 Councillor Matlow established mechanism for broader public support which may evolve into OPNG Steering Committee. • In May FOP met with Sandy Straw of Parks Department • If TTC plans to redevelop Davisville Yards; then • Community will have to be part of consul- tation and approval process • Previous Davisville Yard Study added no new green space; had little community support • F OP and sister Associations will be part of development plans by TTC
