Objectives • Simulate two line terminal substation in lab • For testing, training, and demonstration purposes • Use SEL (Schweitzer Engineering Labs) line relays • Simulate Breaker in Hardware • HMI (Human Machine Interface) • Control, status, and alarms of “breakers” • Learn about: • DNP (Distributed Network Protocol), • SEL RTAC (Real-Time Automation Controller ) • HMI interfaces

  3. System prior to project • One rack was built as complete line terminal • DNP functionality needed to be added • Second rack needing to be rebuilt from scratch

  9. RTAC • SEL-3530 RTAC • Connects to PC via USB or Ethernet • Used DNP over Ethernet to communicate with SEL-421 and SEL-411L relays • Used DNP over RS232 to communicate to SEL-321 relay

  10. New Line Relays • SEL-421, 411L, 321 • System is setup with one line-relay per breaker • Communicates with RTAC via DNP • Trips, closes and receives breaker status via 125 Volt DC discrete circuitry • Used our company standard relay inputs and outputs

Existing Relays • Existing Rack Represents Single Line Terminal • SEL-421 and 311C redundant line terminal relays • SEL-351S breaker relay • Reclosing, Breaker Failure, etc. • Only SEL-421 Communicates to RTAC • DNP Over Ethernet • Trips, closes and receives breaker status via 125 Volt DC discrete circuitry

Breaker Simulation • Used custom logic SEL-421 to simulate four breakers • Reasons for 421 • Availability • Buttons, lights, timers are contained in one unit • Easier wiring than original plan • Programming could be expanded to allow for different failures • Breaker failure, Slow trip, fast reclose, etc.

Challenges • Choosing hardware and laying out wiring • Obtaining hardware and software • Learning to use the SEL graphical logic to get breaker simulator working • Getting logged in and communicating to all devices • Passwords, baud rates, and IP addresses weren’t always easy to find • Learning to use DNP map in relays

Challenges • Learning about RTAC as absolute beginner • SEL has a helpful video series on YouTube that starts at more basic level than the manual • Getting first status point working from relays • Getting first control point working from relays • Learning to use Diagram Builder • Getting diagram to display

  20. Future • Get DNP to SEL-321 working • Bring back more alarms and statuses to HMI • Add different types of failures to breaker simulator
