There are well-known vineyards that occupy about 29,000 hectares, which for several centuries produce top wines. The most popular variety is Tempranillo, which occupies most of the Rioja. Rioja Alavesa is famous for its unique types of fruit wines. Rioja Baja is located on 25,000 hectares east of Logrono where the dark varieties are grown. The grapes for this wine were sourced from the selected vineyards around the town of Haro who have long-term contracts with the winery. The vineyards are on average 20 years old. There are long and cold winters, warm summers with colder nights and the average daily temperature here is around 11C. The soils here are very diverse. Harvest: beginning of October.
