  2. Test Development • MEAP and MEAP–Access items written by Michigan teachers • Items/Selections reviewed by several committees Bias Review Committee Content Review Committee Field Reviews – Teachers from across state

  3. Test Development cont’d • Based on GLCEs • Items field tested during operational testing window • Includes both narrative and informational text • In 2009 began using commissioned selections in addition to permissioned selections

MEAP Test Design for 2011 (same as 2010) Grades 3 thru 8 Paired reading selections Text 1 (8 MC items) Text 2 (8 MC items) Text 1 & 2 (6 cross-text MC items) Independent reading selection Text 3 (8 MC items + 1 short answer CR item worth 3 points) Total: 33 points (+ two field test texts with 24 items)

  5. Short Answer Constructed Response • Purpose: Another way for students to show understanding • Could assess any of the GLCEs • Scored for comprehension • Scored using customized 3-point rubric

Sample Questions (from 2007) Grade 5: All About Alligators • List three locations in which alligators can be found. • Describe alligators using three details from the selection. • Explain why alligators can be dangerous using three details from the selection. Sample Rubric (Listing prompt) A 3- point response provides three text-based locations in which alligators can be found A 2-point response provides two text-based locations in which alligators can be found A 1-point response provides one text-based location in which an alligator could be found. A 0-point response receives a Condition Code: A = Off-topic; B = Illegible or written in language other than English; C = Blank; D = Insufficient to rate; E = Incorrect answer

Sample Rubric (Describe/Explain prompt) A 3-point response describes three text-based details describing alligators A 2-point response describes two text-based details describing alligators A 1-point response describes one text-based detail describing alligators A 0-point response receives a Condition Code: A = Off-topic; B = Illegible or written in a language other than English; C = Blank; D = Insufficient to rate; E = Incorrect answer

Schedule for MEAP Day 1: Tuesday, October 11 Part 1 = approximately 60 minutes Part 2 = approximately 40 minutes (strongly recommend a.m. and p.m. sessions) Day 2: Wednesday, October 12 Part 1 = approximately 80 minutes Make-up Dates: October 13, 14, 17, 20-21, 24-28 *Need to field test during operational testing window

  10. MEAP-ACCESS Test Design for 2011 MEAP-Access Text 1 (8 MC items) Text 2 (8 MC items) Text 3 (8 MC items) Word Study (8 MC items) Total: 32 points (+Field Test Text with 8 items and 3 Word Study items)

  11. MEAP-Access Details • Field tested in 2010 and operational this year • Evaluates GLCEs • Text divided into sections with items following each section • Only 3 options per item • No constructed response items

Schedule for MEAP-Access Day 1: Tuesday, October 11 Part 1 = approximately 30 minutes Part 2 = approximately 30 minutes Part 3 = approximately 20 minutes (recommend a.m. and p.m. sessions) Day 2: Wednesday, October 12 Part 1 = approximately 30 minutes Part 2 = approximately 30 minutes Make-up Dates: October 13, 14, 17, 20-21, 24-28 *Need to field test during operational testing window

Tips • Become familiar with “Released Items” from website • 2005 and 2006 released 100% of items • 2007 and 2008 released Independent Reading items • 2009 and on, not releasing any items but Item Descriptors are available on the MEAP website • For CR items, impress upon students importance of answering question that was asked • Don’t “drill and kill” just before the test
