  2. What is Climate Change? United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (2006) Defines Climate Change as: “a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the atmosphere and which is in addition to the natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods.” WHO (2005), The Caribbean islands are among the countries likely to be most vulnerable to climate variability and long-term climate change, particularly extreme weather and climate events.

  3. Why focus on Climate Change? • Developing countries are the most vulnerable to climate change. • Impacts are worse - already more flood and drought prone. A large share of the economy is in climate sensitive sectors. • Lower capacity to adapt - because of a lack of financial, institutional and technological capacity and access to knowledge. • Climate changeis likely to impact disproportionately upon the poorest countries and the poorest persons within countries, exacerbating inequities in health status and access to adequate food, clean water and other resources.

Effects of Climate Changein Manchester • Reduced agricultural production and degradation of land • Changes in rainfall patterns (frequency and intensity) • Temperature increases • Prolonged drought period • Intense rainfall events, leading to flooding and storm surges • Reduced fish catches • Sea level rise • Impacts on food and water security • Loss of coral reefs • Loss of mangroves • Hurricanes • Coastal erosion

Flooding and Sea level rise. • Increased risk of floods- potentially displacing thousands of people, due to sea level rise and heavy rainfall events, especially in low-lying deltaic areas. • Jamaica is projected to lose about 3.8% of its land area with a sea level rise of ten meter - very difficult to adapt due to lack of adaptive capacity.   6. Agricultural Production and Food Security Food production needs to double to meet the needs of an additional 3 billion people in the next 30 years. • Climate change is projected to decrease agricultural productivity in the tropics and sub-tropics with little amount of warming.

  7. Prolonged Drought • Climate change is projected to decrease water availability in the tropical region. • Population facing water scarcity will more than double over the next 30 years • One third of the world’s population is now subject to water scarcity.

  8. Objectives of the Project • Demonstrate how existing resources can be modified to adapt successfully to climate change. • Facilitate public education and sensitization. • Propose legislation and changes in existing legislation to foster environmentally sustainable development. • Strengthen community awareness and resilience concerning climate change. • Build partnerships among stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of activities.
