  3. Research and Marketing Objectives Our survey aimed to determine whether or not students… • were aware of Kansas Relays • knew the Kansas Relays were free with a valid KU ID • were aware the shot put and long jump were help downtown • had previously competed in the relays

Research and Marketing Objectives cont’d Our survey also aimed to determine… • What would entice students to attend • What would discourage students from attending • If student relay competitions would attract students from attending/competing • What extras (food, free t-shirt, live music) would bring in the most students

  5. Method Who? Journalism 568: Marketing and Media Research What? How Many? Conducted a survey to measure KU students’ knowledge of the Kansas Relays Each interviewer surveyed one Freshman, one Sophomore, one Junior and one Senior. Of the four surveys, two had to be male and two had to be female. A total of 372 KU students were surveyed. How? Students were chosen at random Where? On KU campus When? From April 11th to April 16th

  8. KU Student awareness of Kansas Relays 83%of respondents had heard of the Kansas Relays * *percentage based off 372 respondents. All subsequent questions were only answered by those respondents who had heard of the Kansas Relays

  9. Of the 372 respondents that were interviewed, 73%knew that college athletes competed in the Relays * 79% of respondents did not know that professional and Olympic athletes competed in the Relays *percentages based off 307 respondents

  10. Pole Vault and 100-Meter Dash were the two most popular events combining for 85% High Jump was third in popularity with29%

  11. 61% * of respondents were not aware that admission to the Relays is free with a KU ID 78% of freshmen were aware that admission is free with a KU ID, the most of any class *percentage based off 309 respondents

  12. 61% * Of respondents were not aware that the shot put and long jump competitions were held downtown at 8th and New Hampshire last year or this year *percentage based off 309 respondents

  13. 78% * of KU students knew the difference between the Kansas Relays and Relay for Life. *percentage based off 310 respondents

  14. * 65% of KU students would be interestedin attending the Relays if it included relay events for student groups and someone they knew was competing. However, only 30%said they would be likely to compete in the relay event with their student group. *percentages based off 310 respondents

  15. Free food was the most popular incentive that would attract students to the Relays at 58% The second most popular was a free t-shirt followed by live music. *percentage based off 310 respondents

Student Groups Participating • Greek house emphasis • Winner get $ to philanthropy • Promote Olympics and Professionals • Campaign in Kansan • Unique advertising campaigns • Promos with restaurants on Mass St. • Torch passing down Jayhawk Blvd. • Incentive to attend • Free food • Free admissions • Interactive Relay game on 4square app • Get a group of four friends who will check-in to the app at different times & events during the Relays. Winners get a prize
