  1. Dan Hertz A Examination Physics Department Cornell University 5/4/05 MSSM, SUSY and discovery potential at the LHC

  2. If you knew Susy like I know Susy, oh oh oh what a girl... • Why do we like SUSY? • Because it's pretty... • and SUPER • Higgs quadratic divergence problem solved • Hierarchy Problem • Gauge unification • It gives us lots of stuff to look for

  3. The SUSY Particles

  4. SUSY Lagrangian Lgauge + Lint: Gauge interactions Lchiral: Dimensionless, non-gauge SUSY Terms (soft)

  5. Solution? universal soft masses universal gaugino masses (scalar)3 like Yukawa Keep it real When SUSY breaks... • ~100 new parameters! • Problems: • FCNC • CP • meg • Kaon mixing

  6. The Bad Reality check? Reasonable assumptions? A victim of its own popularity? mSUGRA The Good: • Simple: • 4 parameters + 1: • m0 , m1/2, A0, B0 (m) • m0, m1/2, A0, tanb, sgn(m) • Dark Matter

  7. Sample mSUGRA spectrum m0 = 60 GeV, m1/2 = 250 GeV, A0 = 0, tanb = 10, m > 0

  8. Exclusive 2l + E_miss (+ jets) 2 l, no jets 3l, no jets Cutoff in mll What do we look for? Inclusive • as broad as possible • Try to see something • (jets, E_miss) • leptons, jets, E_miss • anything

  9. What do we see? cutoff in mll Reach

  10. Great, we've got a signal! Now what... • Celebrate • Declare victory • Check all our models • points in parameter space • Probe how mSUGRA (SUSY) works • But...

  11. What if it's not right? The negative approach • Look for ways to disprove SUSY • correlated signals • 2l SS, no jets • 2l OS, no jets • 104 mSUGRA points • bounded region in space of correlated signals
