  1. First Principles Bible Study Techniques

  2. Introduction • The Bible is the Christian’s weapon against sin and Satan. No soldier enters into combat without first knowing his weapons and understanding how to effectively use them. This lesson is intended to instruct the Christian in how to study and use the word of God.

  3. Ephesians 6:11-17 • You are to be girt about (surrounded) with truth • The breastplate of righteousness • Feet shod (covered like a shoe) with the gospel • The shield of faith • Helmet of salvation • Sword of the Spirit

  4. Ephesians 6:11-17 Most are defensive in nature, but the Bible is an offensive weapon. The only way for it to be effective is through putting in time studying and memorizing the words of God.

  5. Why Study? • It is commanded (2 Timothy 2:15) • Profitable (2 Timothy 3:16) • Victory (Psalm 119:11) • It gives light to our understanding (Psa 119:130) • It is the only means to test religious teaching (Isaiah 8:20) • It is the way Jesus Christ defeated Satan in the temptation (Matt. 4:4, 7, 10)

  6. Procedure for Study • Daily (Acts 17:11) • Obediently (James 1:22) • Contextually (Isa. 28:9-10). • Systematically – Read through the Bible once a year, which is about 4 chapters a day, which is about 15-20 minutes a day. As you read, take notice of things in the Bible, marking in the margin using a system called SPECS.

  7. SPECS • Sin to avoid (Col. 3:5-6) • Promise to claim (Jer. 33:3; Phil. 4:13,19) • Example to follow (1 Peter 2:21-23) • Command to obey (Matt. 28:19-20; Eph. 6:18) • Stumbling blocks to beware (Col. 2:8)

  8. Types of Bible Study • Quiet time – David said we are to meditate upon the precepts of the Lord (Psalm 1:1-3). * Convenient time * Consistent time Job 23:12 says it is to be as important to us and as routine with us as eating and sleeping

  9. Elements of Quiet Time • Begin with prayer • Read your Bible • When you find something meaningful, mark it • As God leads, start digging into different words, phrases, using a concordance to show you where a particular word/phrase is found elsewhere in the Bible. Remember The Holy Spirit will lead you. • Close in prayer

  10. Public Bible Study • Pastors are to teach • Be hearers and doers of the word (Ja. 1:22) • Receive the word with gladness (Ja. 1:21) • The first century Christians continued steadfast in the Apostles’ doctrine (Acts 2:42). Don’t be afraid of doctrine; it is just what you believe.

  11. Bible Study Tools • Cross Referencing • Study Bibles • Concordances – an alphabetical index of the words in the Bible. Strong’s is the best hardcover concordance. • Commentaries, but beware! They are only man’s ideas and thoughts and can mislead you. • Tablets
