  1. Usosespeciales de los artículos Special uses of the definite and the indefinite articles

  2. In English we do not use the articles as much as they do in Spanish. As for a rule- in English we do not use articles with abstract nouns or nouns used in a generic/general sense. • Uses of the definite article: • (el, la, los, y las) • Use with titles when speaking ABOUT someone • Elseñor Will hablaespañol.

  3. Do NOT use the article when speaking DIRECTLY TO someone with a title • -Buenos días, Srta. González • Use the definite article with days of the week to convey “on…” • Vamos a Burleson loslunes. • Elmiércoles hay un examen.

  4. Use the definite article with articles of clothing and parts of the body (especially with reflexive verbs) instead of the possessive adjective. • Me pongoloszapatos.

  5. Often in English, the object is plural when the subject is plural. • The students take off their jackets. • But, in Spanish, the object noun is usually singular. • Los alumnos se quitanla chaqueta. • (since each student has one jacket)

  6. Uses of the indefinite article: • (un, unaunos, y unas) • Omit the indefinite article after the verb “ser” and before a profession. (In English we use it here!) • La señora Estrada esabogada. • However, use the indefinite article when the profession is modified by an adjective. • Éles un buenrey, peroellaesuna mala reina.
