  2. Types of Injections • Subcutaneous – Administered in the layer of skin directly below the dermis and epidermis • SC, SQ, sub-cu, sub-Q or subcut. Subcut is the preferred abbreviation for patient safety

  3. Types of Injections • Intramuscular – the injection of a medicine directly into the muscle • IM is the preferred abbreviation for patient safety

  4. Types of Injections • Intravenous - injection into a vein for the purpose of instilling a single dose of medication • Fast acting; travel through body quickest • IV is the preferred abbreviation for patient safety

  5. Types of Injections • Intradermal – an injection of medicine into layers of the skin • This type of injection is often employed to check for allergies, tuberculosis, and other elements, and administer rabies treatments

Preparing the Medication • Determine what type of injection you are giving • Assemble the medication and needle. • Remove the needle cover. • Insert the syringe needle into the rubber center on the top of the medicine bottle. • Pull the plunger back to a mark at the prescribed amount of medication. • Inspect the medication in the syringe for air bubbles • Push the plunger until the air bubbles are removed.

  13. Preparing the Medication • Determine the injection site • Insert the needle quickly and carefully at the proper angle • Inject the medicine into the patient. • Push the plunger down until all of the fluid has been released. • Remove the needle quickly

  14. Other Types of Medication • Topical - is a medication that is applied to body surfaces to treat varying ailments • creams, foams, gels, lotions and ointments. • Oral’s – Paste, liquid, or pills that are administered orally
