  3. Our Site (map) (photograph) • The GFE is used for • Neighbors walk by • Homeless people sleep • Education about gardening & composting

  4. Our Site (pictures & names of plants)

  5. What is an Urban Backyard? • Shows visitors how they could apply permaculture to their urban backyards • Pretty, functional • Food • Somewhere to sit

  6. What to Keep or Improve • Wheelchair accessibility • 4 feet paths • Community space • Homeless friendly • Discourage them from sleeping on plant beds • Low maintenance

  7. Timeline of the GFE • History (SLUG?) • Future plans & funding

  8. The Design Process

  9. Microclimate (microclimate map) (talk about microclimate…)

  10. Zones & Sectors (zone sector map) (talk about zones - 4 talk about sectors)

  11. Surveying as Input to the Design Process • We wanted to see what people wanted out of the GFE, or what they liked about it • We’re designing a model permaculture backyard, but we’d like to design it in a way that our visitors would still like to visit • A traditional charette wouldn’t work because people probably wouldn’t come - they are only visitors

  12. Surveying as Input to the Design Process • (pass around copies of survey) • We wrote a survey; online • We will use this feedback to modify our design if necessary, and to decide on plant selection

  13. The Permaculture Ethics’ Influence on the Design • People Care • This garden should be a space for people • The garden should educate people about the earth • Earth Care • Educating people about the earth may encourage them to start caring for the earth more • Fair Share • The garden is for the community

  14. Desired Plants • We all came up with ideas for plants we wanted • Stacey filled in the rest

  15. Desired Plants (pictures & names of desired plants)

  16. Our Designs
