  6. Pupil Group News On Thursday afternoon last week Scotland’s Children and Young People’s Commissioner visited our school. His name is Bruce Adamson and he is from New Zealand but has been in Scotland for over 16 years. He is a lawyer and has been working with children and families for over 20 years. He took over the post of Commissioner for Children and Young People in May last year and this was his first visit to Orkney. He was accompanied by Stephan Grounds, a member of his team in Edinburgh, Jack Norquoy, who is one of Orkney’s Youth Parliament members and Ernie Skea who is part of Orkney’s Community Learning and Development Team.

  7. Pupil Group News Our P6 and P7 Eco Club, Games Parliament and Pupil Council members were joined by pupils from P7 at Glaitness School and we met up in GP Room 2. Mr Adamson introduced himself and told us a bit about his job and what he did. He said he liked to meet and speak to children and young people and listen to their thoughts and ideas and what was important to them. We also discussed the Global Goals and we told him about our New Years Resolution to focus on three of them – Gender Equality, Quality Education and Clean Water and Sanitation which our three Pupil Groups are promoting.

  8. Pupil Group News He asked us questions about living in Orkney, what was good about it and what wasn’t so good! We discussed it with each other and in groups and then shared our thoughts with everyone. It seemed that everyone thought living here wasn’t too bad at all! We also spoke about the Your Kirkwall Youth Summit which we attended to look at Kirkwall in the future and what we would like to see in the plans. The Glaitness pupils shared a project they have been working on to try to raise awareness about the dangers to the environment of throwing away plastic and in particular plastic straws. At the end we had a group photo taken which is on our website.
