Electing Champions for a Social Europe EAPN CONFERENCE– 01/10/2013 1) General Remarks The Questioning of the European Meetings of People Experiencing Poverty at a time with increasing levels of poverty and inequality, is incredible! Better Visibility of this Years Meeting – Big increase in the number of MEPs who attended – Commissioner and many Commission Officials present – Low participation of National Authorities

  4. Electing Champions for a Social Europe EAPN CONFERENCE– 01/10/2013 2) Content of this Year’s Meeting Exchange on the costs of a basket of goods and services needed for a life in dignity and how this compares with the reality of what is available from Minimum Income Schemes (where such schemes exist) or from Minimum Wages Shared examples of the impact of the ‘crisis on peoples daily lives’ Shared ‘interesting practices’ in different countries that contribute to the fight against poverty The Report of this Years PeP meeting will be available shortly

  5. Electing Champions for a Social Europe EAPN CONFERENCE– 01/10/2013 3) Messages from this Years Meeting • The European level PEP Meetings must continue and give momentum to National level processes that ensure the participation of people experiencing poverty. • There is a harmonization of the costs of a decent life in the different European Countries but still huge differences between wage levels and social welfare schemes and no real effort to ensure high level social standards across Europe. This is creating a totally unbalanced Europe. • The response to the crisis is developing behavior that undermines respect for human rights, such as: labour exploitation, xenophobia and increased discrimination, more waste in our societies (empty houses while having increased homelessness), growing distrust in our politicians and political institutions, criminalisation and negative stereotyping of ‘poor people’, while doing nothing to tackle the increasing concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few.

  6. Electing Champions for a Social Europe EAPN CONFERENCE– 01/10/2013 3) Messages from this Years Meeting 4. Youth unemployment is a big priority but unemployment and poor quality employment is also an issue for older people and for groups who experience discrimination. 5. We don’t see any EU strategy on the ground to make real the EU poverty reduction target. 6. We demand an EU Directive on the Adequacy of Minimum Income Schemes and a common effort to ensure ‘living wages’. 7. To fight the ‘crisis’ you should stop fighting the ‘poor’ and start fighting for tax justice, ethical business practices and better redistribution of the wealth that is available

  7. Electing Champions for a Social Europe EAPN CONFERENCE– 01/10/2013 4) European Parliament Elections 2014 We want that the debates for the European Parliament Elections to address the issues identified at the 2013 PeP meeting. We want to see proposals that respond to our concerns This is the only way to build a Europe close to the people
