An Overview of Support Services for the Disabled

The right by the disabled to get specialized care services is mandated by law and is laid down as a fundamental right under Article 25 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The charter goes on to elaborate on the right of people with disabilities to get without discrimination, access to the best healthcare facilities. This is one reason why Governments around the world have made this aspect an integral part of their welfare activities.

  1. An Overview of Support Services for the Disabled

  2. An analysis of a few reports and statistics strengthens the point of why disability support servicesare so critical in today’s world. About 110 to 190 million adults in the world have severely restricted functioning due to some disability and over a billion people (about 15% of the total world’s population) have some form of disability that prevents them from leading an unfettered life. What is worrying is that far from abating, the rates of disabilities are growing at an alarming rate over the years as the current population age and face chronic health issues.

  3. The whole problem is compounded by the fact that people with disabilities are facing very serious troubles because the growth in the number of disability support serviceshas failed to match the rise in the number of people who require these services. • What are the types of impairments where the roles of disability support services become critical? • The first is intellectual disability. This is linked to conditions of slow mental functioning and adversely impacts learning and the ability to perform daily normal tasks, thereby cutting them off from the community. • The second is a physical disability which prevents people from going through normal physical activities mainly reduced mobility. This state generally stems from some physical disorders like motor neuron disease, cerebral palsy, quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, or deformities of the limbs. Old age too without any of these problems but restricted functioning abilities also fall in this category and require constant care and supervision of disability support services.

  4. Finally, there is the psychiatry disability arising from anxiety disorders, personality disorders, stress, psychosis, and adjustment orders. With the world and every sector of society becoming more and more competitive, these stress disorders are increasingly coming to the surface, and without constant external care accidents and fatalities are bound to happen. • Before selecting disability support servicesfor specialized care and help, persons with disabilities should first identify their specific needs and the extent of help required. The old and the slightly infirm might only need help with domestic chores like cleaning, doing the laundry and the lawn, cooking, and shopping. People who are too weak for even limited mobility will need assistance with personal care, medication, and mobility support. • The financial package is calculated on the extent and type of disability support servicesrequired. Check the Government websites too as most countries have subsidized packages for the disabled.
