Why the NextGen Initiative? • The proportion of older workers is expected to grow four percent annually between 2000 and 2015 • The proportion of younger workers is shrinking • CPS Human Services • Replacement gap starting in 2006: • Workforce shortage of 10 million • Greatest turnover in aging workers will be in executive and managerial occupations • Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Greatest turnover in aging workers will be in executive and managerial occupations

The Up-and-Comers • NASPAA data suggests that approximately 14,000 MPAs/MPPs graduate and enter the workforce each year • Approximately 4,000 consider state and local government • In the 1960s, approximately 30 percent of Harvard Law graduates entered public service; today that number is 3 percent

  11. ICMA Student Membership • $25 per year • Complimentary conference registration • Access to ICMA’s eLibrary • Network of managers and assistants at conference • Resume booster • PM Magazine, newsletters, listservs, etc.

Local Government Management Fellowship Program 0 • Partnership between ICMA, NFBPA, NASPAA, and IHN • Goals: • Generate interest in local government management among recent graduates • Provide new opportunities for recent graduates • Place 100 Fellows by 2008 • Pilot Year 2004; Six Fellows Placed • 2005; 17 Fellows Placed (14 new, 3 renewals) • 2006; 19 Fellows Placed (13 new, 6 renewals) • So far! Three hosts still pending

Local Government Management Internship Program 0 • Undergraduate internship program coordinated by Wittenberg University • Nine week program places undergraduates with host local governments; unpaid • Students work on special projects and attend evening classes • 2005 program hosted in Meredith, New Hampshire • Hosts found for 2007 and 2008 program (2006 program cancelled) • January/February 2006 PM Article
