  1. Literature: Wednesday, August 21, 2013 Handouts: * English & Literature syllabus * Hatchet Unit Schedule * Hatchet Vocabulary Pre-test Homework: * Do something fun!  * Review Hatchet chapters 1 & 2 (quiz tomorrow) * Devise a system for learning the HatchetVocab definitions Assignments Due: * Did you finish reading Hatchet over the summer?

  2. Today’s Goal: Learn the difference between English and Literature and what to expect in our first unit, Hatchet. Outcomes: Describe what makes Literature class distinctive (different) from English class. Engage in an ice breaker to learn new names. Strategize (plan) how to demonstrate what you learned from our summer reading of Hatchet. Demonstrate your understanding of new terms in Hatchet by taking a Vocabulary pre-test.

  3. Starter #1: How many of you could explain why we have English class AND Lit class? That is, what’s the difference? Or to put it another way, what’s distinctive about each one? We’re going to come back to this question, but first, let’s do something a little more fun. . . . 

  4. Starter #2: Many of you know one another, but in every one of my classes, I don’t think there is anyone who could name every single person because we get new students each year. So everyone has at least some new names to learn. So let’s try a memory trick. Pretend that no one in this class knows your name. Think of something you could tell the whole class that would help them to remember your name, and keep it brief. It could be a . . . symbolic association or a word trick an explanation about why your parents gave you that name a mini story related to your name For example . . . [Mrs. D’s mini story ]

  5. Starter #3: How many of you have ever been given something called a “syllabus” in school? What’s a syllabus? Let me show you what a syllabus is, then see if you can tell meits purpose. . . .

  6. Starter #4: How many of you read Hatchet over the summer? How many of you could prove that you read it? How would you demonstrate or prove that you read and understood Hatchet? Let’s look at today’s handouts. . . .What might be another name for the “Hatchet Unit Schedule”? We could call it a “Unit _____________.”Discuss Hatchet schedule (syllabus) and Vocabulary Pre-Test[If time permits, do pre-test & grade]

  7. Starter #5: Please take everything off from your desk except for a sheet of notebook paper and a pen (blue or black ink only). Let’s take a Vocab Pre-Test. Monday during the Open House you got a head’s up that this was coming. The purpose of this test is to let you see how well you know each of the vocabulary terms from Hatchet.
