Steven Izzo March 6, 2008 Structures Final Stress Considerations

This research explores stress sources in launch vehicle structures and examines the effects of various factors, such as thrust vectoring, engine misalignment, spin stabilization, thermal effects, material property variance, and expansion. The results indicate that the applied and critical load models do not lead to any problems with other stresses. Further work includes writing a report on this study.

  2. Research stress sources Modify numbers in code Check for failure/sizing change Method Results • Thrust vectoring- bending- ok for all angles • Engine misalignment- torsion and bending- ok for worst case • Spin stabilization- torsion and bending- ok unless very fast spin-up • Thermal effects- • Material property variance- ok unless extreme temperature range • Expansion- ok from use of joining like materials AAE 450 Spring 2008 Structures

  3. More Results • Acoustics- vibration- ok due to solid prop and balloon • Local stresses reserved for a future design • Conclusion- large applied and critical load models lead to no problems with other stresses Future Work • Write Report AAE 450 Spring 2008 Structures
