  1. WP3 Hygiene Producing a safe product

  2. Current Situation Designated Shellfish Harvesting AreaCriteria. End Product Criteria. Bivalve definition.

  3. Future Potential Criteria Proposed Draft Standard for Fresh/Live Abalone (Haliotis Spp) CX/FFP 08/29/11 ‘The Codex’ Movement to Viral monitoring.Norovirus/phage Risk Analysis Procedures

  4. Is The Tide Turning? • (ii)  As far as the situation with the classification of gastropods harvesting areas is concerned, the legal position remains that gastropods (and tunicates and echinoderms) need to comply with the same conditions as bivalve molluscs and therefore can only be harvested from classified areas. I mentioned at the recent SAGB Mollusc Committee meeting that the European Commission has recently indicated that it is prepared to review this position with regard to gastropods.  This process is still very much in the early stages but indications are that Member States (at least those with gastropod production areas) are willing and keen for this situation to be reviewed and clarified.  My personal opinion is that there would be reasonable support for a change to the Regulations to allow in the future at least non filter-feeding gastropods to be harvested from non classified areas and controls to be based on end product testing, though I cannot guarantee such an outcome.  The UK would support such a move on the basis that risk assessment appears to indicate a lower level of risk from non filter-feeding gastropods than bivalve molluscs. 5. How can Sudevab ADD impetus to the Changes?1.new Research. Comparing E.coli uptake in Abalone in exactly the same conditions of culture with mussels and oysters. Comparing norovirus uptake in controlled conditions with that in oysters2.Communicate the new data to legislators3.produce process documentation based on abalone specific risk analysis that will convey confidence to the consumer What are we doing?

  6. Technical Research Currently Underway Direct Comparison in real culture conditions Direct Comparison in Experimental conditions. • Where? • Jersey and The Fal in SW England • What Criteria? • E.coli presence in Ormers Mussels Oysters from real beds in real time over a range of environmental conditions • Where? • Integrin Biosystems • What Criteria? • Relative rate of uptake of Ecoli and Norovirus in a standartdised condition monitored over a 72 hour period
