    3. Specialised Diplomas Vocational qualifications developed by industrial bodies Each diploma available at three levels First teaching of five diplomas in September 2008 Further roll out of the remaining nine in the following two years

    4. The three levels Level 1 equivalent to 4-5 GCSEs at grades D-G Level 2 equivalent to 5-6 GCSEs at grades A*-C Level 3 equivalent to 3 A levels

    5. Key components of Specialised Diplomas Subject knowledge Work Experience Functional skills Functional ICT Functional English Functional Maths Personal learning and thinking skills (employability skills) Extended Project

    6. The first five diplomas Construction and the Built Environment Society, Health and Development ICT Creative and Media Engineering

    7. The remaining diplomas 2009 Land based and Environmental Manufacturing Hair and Beauty Business Administration and Finance Hospitality and Catering 2010 Public Services Sport & Leisure Retail Travel and Tourism Science ???

    8. The national entitlement By 2013, every 14-19 year old will have an entitlement to access any of the 14 lines of learning at a level that is appropriate to their abilities.

The Gateway for 2008 Only partnerships that demonstrate they have the capacity to deliver Specialised Diplomas will be allowed to offer courses in 2008 To be allowed to offer SDs, partnerships were required to submit proposals in December Reading submitted proposals to deliver each of the five diploma lines We will know whether or not we have been successful around the end of March However by 2013 all partnerships must provide access to all diplomas

    12. The engagement of local business Minimum of 10 days work experience as part of all diplomas The programme needs to be taught within a clear business context Visits to businesses Involvement of business in classroom delivery Involvement of business in framing the curriculum
