  2. Rules for Working in the Lab • Never work in the lab unless teacher is present. • Follow all directions. • Only do activities approved by teacher. • If you don’t understand directions or equipment, ask teacher.

  3. Rules for Working in the Lab • Never fool around in lab. • Wear appropriate clothing

  4. Rules for Working in the Lab • Keep lab clean and free of clutter • Keep floors and isles clear

  5. Rules for Working in the Lab • Know how to properly use lab equipment • Know what to do in case of injury and broken equipment • Keep things away from eyes, mouth and ears

  6. Conduct • Always be careful, even when using simple everyday materials. • Walk…don’t run • Never throw objects • Don’t touch equipment until told to • No horseplay or practical jokes • Follow both written and oral directions

  7. Protective Clothing • Safety Goggles • Protects eyes from chemicals and flying objects • Gloves • Protects hands from chemicals and germs

  8. Protective Clothing • Lab Coats and Aprons • Protects body and clothing from chemicals • Other • Tie long hair back • Wear shoes…no sandals or open toed shoes • No loose clothing

  10. Other Considerations • Keep work area free of things you don’t need for the activity. • Never eat, drink, taste, touch, or smell anything while in the lab.

  11. Other Considerations • Always wash your hands thoroughly at end of lab session. • Everyone helps clean up lab

  12. Managing Accidents & Spills • Water Spill • clean up immediately • Chemical Spill • Keep others away…tell teacher

  13. Managing Accidents & Spills • Broken Glass - Tell teacher, use brush and dust pan, put all pieces in paper bag or cardboard box

  14. Managing Accidents & Spills • Minor Heat Burn - Run cold water over burn • Fire at Work Station - Tell adult and get away, Do not use water on electrical fire, Do not blow out fire by fanning • Person on Fire – drop to floor and roll…use fire blanket

  15. Safety Equipment • ABC Fire Extinguisher – use to put out fires

  16. Safety Equipment • Fire Blanket – put out small fires on surfaces or person

  17. Safety Equipment • Eye Wash Station – used to rinse eyes

  18. Safety Equipment • Shower – used if chemicals get on skin or seep through clothing

  19. Handling Chemicals • Never pour chemical back into original container • Many chemicals look alike…never use a chemical in an unlabeled container

  20. Handling Chemicals • Smell chemicals by wafting – hold ~15cm away and gently wave hand over open container • Wash with water if chemicals get on skin • Acids and bases neutralize each other

  21. Waste Disposal • Waste is material that is no use to you • Hazardous waste are materials that can harm living things and the environment.

  22. Non-Hazardous Waste • Even though not harmful must be disposed of properly • Paper and paper towels can be thrown in trash can unless used to wipe up hazardous waste

  23. Hazardous Waste • Never dispose of hazardous waste in a way that can threaten living things • Never pour down sink or in toilet • Flammable liquids or waste with flammable liquids should be disposed in something non-flammable with lid (metal)

  24. Heat Sources and Electricity • Heating A Container • Never heat something in a closed container • Make sure container is not cracked or chipped • Handling Hot Containers • Use heat resistant gloves or tongs • Hot and cold containers look the same…always assume container is hot

  25. Heat Sources and Electricity • Using A Hot Plate • Just like an electric stove • Make sure area is free of water • Using Electricity • Always unplug by pulling the plug itself • Never use water to put out an electrical fire • Make sure cords are in good shape

  26. Glassware • Make sure glassware is not cracked or chipped • Tell the teacher immediately • Label containers • Have paper towels close in case of spill

  27. Sharp Objects • Always hold firmly by handles • Never run while holding sharp objects • Cut in the direction away yourself and others • Never leave sharp objects lying around.

  28. Final Note • If any accident or spill occurs always tell the teacher immediately
