Avoiding Bias in Language • Bias-Free Language • Inclusive language – treats individuals of different genders, races, cultures and abilities without offending them • Female lawyer/blonde surgeon • The student should bring his book to class. • The student should bring their book to class. • The students should bring their books to class.

  10. Working with Copy • Copy • Written form of a story, headline, caption, advertisement • Hard Copy • Copy appearing on paper, not electronic • Formatting copy (pg198) • Byline • Name person who wrote story, usually printed with story

Working with Copy • Formatting Copy • Slug • Words that identify a story from time given to time published • Dateline • Place story was written – at beginning if not locally written • Editing • Rearranging the story; fixing the misused words; correcting spellings; etc. • Copyediting Symbol (pg 200-201) • Standard symbol to make correction/change on hard copy – symbolic language between reporters and editors working on hard copy
