  1. NWS FLDWAV ANALYSIS TOOL FLDAT Office of Hydrologic Development NOAA/NWS/Hydrology Laboratory Janice M. Sylvestre WMO/NOAAHydrologic Forecasting Course NWS Training CenterKansas City, MOOctober 27, 2003

  2. Hydraulic Modeling Components FLDWAV: NWS Hydraulic Routing Model Stand-Alone (R&D Application) Operation within NWSRFS FLDAT: FLDWAV Analysis Tool Generates input deck for FLDWAV Displays and analyzes FLDWAV results FLDVIEW: Flood Forecast Mapping Application Displays the extent of flooding FLDIMS: Flood Internet Mapping Service View flood maps in addition to other layers over the Internet

  3. FLDWAV Analysis ToolObjectives • Generate a FLDWAV input deck using a GUI • Convert HEC cross sections to FLDWAV format • Generate cross sections using GIS • Visually display hydraulic information from FLDWAV • Develop database to contain FLDWAV input files • Analyze FLDWAV results • Add calibration capabilities

  4. FLDWAV Analysis ToolBenefits • Reduced time to build FLDWAV datasets • Reduced time to calibrate FLDWAV models • Improve forecasters’ ability to analyze FLDWAV results • Centralized location for all data used for RM models

  5. FLDAT Components • Interactive Input Component (FLDINP) • Cross Section Analysis Component (FLDXS) • Graphical Output Component (FLDGRF) • Output Analysis Component • Database Component

  6. FLDATInteractive Input Component Current Capabilities - Generates input file for FLDWAV (stand-alone) - Displays hydrographs, cross sections, invert profile, empirical rating curves - Export operational FLDWAV segment

  7. FLDATInteractive Input Component Future Enhancements - Error checking capabilities - Help info/documentation - Input analysis capability - Enhanced editing capabilities - Schematic (ability to create input file using objects)

  8. FLDAT: Cross Section Analysis Component Station–Elevation points are visually displayed to represent the topography The actual cross section is converted to FLDWAV format

  9. FLDATCross Section Analysis Component Current Capabilities - Ability to visually display cross sections from various sources (e.g. USACE models) and interactively convert to NWS format (b,h) - Ability to average cross sections - Ability to handle levees and multiple channels - GIS Capability Future Enhancements - Data quality checking - Ability to extract pertinent info from raw data sets (e.g., roughness coefficients) - Ability to recommend the minimum number of required cross sections

  10. FLDATGIS Cross Section Capability Given: Topographic images DEM After drawing the river centerline and placing the cross sections, FLDXS will generate the cross section profile and export cross section data in FLDWAV format.

  11. FLDATGraphical Output Component Current Display Capabilities - Profiles of peak conditions (elevation and discharge) - Discharge hydrographs (computed and observed) at any cross section - Water surface elevation hydrographs (computed and observed) at any cross section - Cross sections showing the peak conditions at any location - Rating curves - External boundary conditions. - Multiple profiles at any time - Multiple hydrographs at any location - Graphically display all hydraulic info in output file based on JNK - Display information on multiple rivers - Print capability Future Enhancements - Compare multiple output displays - Display shape and image files

  12. FLDATGraphical Output Component The Bird’s Eye View allows the user to quickly view the conditions of the river via a snapshot.

  13. FLDATGraphical Output Component The user may also view the river hydraulics with data groupings that show selected conditions.

  14. FLDATGraphical Output Component The user may view cross sections in various ways.

  15. FLDATOutput Analysis Component Capabilities - Capture “blow-ups” and analyze for potential causes - Anticipate model instability and provide warning messages

  16. FLDWAV Analysis Tool Database Component • The RM database component will store data for all river mechanics models. • FLDAT will export all FLDWAV info into a database compatible with IHFS logical data model. • FLDAT will also import FLDWAV data based on river components.

  17. FLDATFuture Components • Launch FLDWAV, FLDVIEW, and FLDXS applications from FLDAT • Calibration Analysis • - Provide volume checks on flow data within the model • - Analyze invert profile to determine potential problems with shallow depths • - Automate as much of the “Procedures” document as possible • - Interactively update Manning n values, rerun FLDWAV and review results • Time Series Analysis • - Extract time series needed for calibration from various sources, display • graphically, and write in FLDWAV or DATACARD format • - Create time series at river confluences • - Convert reservoir pool levels to msl • - Compute missing time series values • - Combine time series • - Generate interpolated time series (e.g. generate 1-hr t.s. from 6-hr t.s.) • - Check time series data for accuracy

  18. FLDAT Specifications System Hardware: Unix Workstation, Linux or Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP System Software: Written in Java 1.1.8 with Swing 1.1.1 JRE 1.3 (Linux) JClass 4.5 ESRI Arcview 3.1+ (for GIS capability) ESRI 3D Analyst (for GIS capability) mySQL 2.23 (for database component) myOBDC 2.5 (for database component)
