  1. Conditions of Acceptable Prayer Luke 11:1 – “It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.’”

  2. It’s Not Just Talking To God • Luke 11:1, Some of Prayer we know intuitively. • Some aspects must be focused on. • We must get it through our heads that God does not accept just anything – Isaiah 1:11ff. • God listens to the heart of the communicant.

  3. Sincerity • Matt. 6:5 – not as the hypocrites. • Some prayers are more “sincere” than others, as our feelings wax and wane. • Make sure prayer isn’t just a salve for a guilty, hurting conscience. • Hypocrites – play actors. • Matt. 15:8; Psa. 17:1.

  4. Humility • Luke 18:10-14 – The Pharisee and the Publican. • We can’t approach God as His equal, nor can we pretend to need Him less than other mortals. • James 4:6, 10; 2 Chron. 34:27.

  5. Fervency • Intensity, the earnestness of our praise or petition must be felt first by us. • Not half-hearted, listless, lethargic. • No “reserve” when we talk with God. • James 5:17; Col. 4:12.

  6. Persistency • Luke 11:5-8. • Luke 18:1-8. • Sometimes God’s apparent “no” is a test of our desire and sense of need.

  7. Watchfulness • Mark 13:33; 14:38; Luke 21:36; Col. 4:2; Eph. 6:18. • We ask, then await God’s answer. • Habakkuk 2:1. • Too often we’ve decided already how God will answer our petition. • What does “sober” in prayer mean – I Peter 4:7?

  8. Thoughtfulness • I Cor. 14:15; Matt. 6:7-8; 26:44. • Prayer deserves consideration, no rushing through. • What is a “trite” phrase?
