  2. This is a brief version of the reading evening presentation. We really hope you can make it on the night . . . .but if not – perhaps this slide show will help

  3. When should I read ? Not when there’s a “good” TV programme on This should be quality time for you and your Child. Try to set time aside as a regular event And . . . . . . Don’t sweat the small stuff

  4. What should I read ? 1. Pre –reading skills • 1. Enjoyment of looking at pictures. • Develop listening skills • Playing games which encourage working • from left to right (this will underpin writing skills) • 4. To follow a story using picture series • Creating a picture story" serial, adding sentences • or words to the pictures

  5. 2. Basic Reading Skills  1. Recognise own name. 2. Recognise familiar words. 3. Recognise word shapes and individual letters. 4. Recognize word sounds. 5. To encourage the children to copy and act at being a reader.

  6. Helping your child As well as sending books and tapes home. Your class homework website will often suggest further practice or Useful websites for you and your child

  7. The BBC has several excellent resources like “Bowns”

  17. Do . . . • Have Fun • Make it Comfortable • Sit side by side • Read left to right • Encourage discussion • Use lots of expression • Use lots of praise • Not worry about mistakes

  18. Don't make reading a chore. threaten that you will “tell Mr Harries” if the child does not read his book. think your child has to compete with any other child.

  19. Don't bottle up problems regarding our child’s reading ability - talk these problems over with the teacher. The teachers are there to help. (You as well as your child!) not worry if your child cannot read every word he comes across or does not enjoy reading every book set aside time for reading when your child wants to watch a particular programme.
