  1. Summary of recent activities in WP6 E. Ciaramella, M. Presi, G. Contestabile, L. Giorgi Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  2. Summary of activities • Link stabilization via optical schemes in optical networks (D9, D24, medium-term scenario): • numerical analysis of WDM-comb replacement with fewer channels => nonlinear impairments • proposed alternative • propagation of transient effects in transparent networks • Regeneration of optical signals (D24, long term) • demonstrated optical clock recovery at 40 Gb/s NRZ • Planned activities Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  3. Q versus Pd/Pch • Results taken for G.652 (D=16 ps/nm/km) and G.655 (D=3 ps/nm/km) • Usual link control techniques cannot be used when many lambda are missing Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  4. Transient effects in optical networks • Source: dynamical add-drop, up/down-grade, fiber cut • "other" channels in the same link experience • power variations • OSNR variations • Solutions: • gain-controlled EDFA (electrical, link, or optical feedback) • tolerant RXs • Issues: • electrical, feedback => lower gain, (low frequency oscillations) • link control: spectral hole burning, NL impairments, cost (additional sources), speed • Impairments CAN propagate to disjoint paths Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  5. Transit Node 1 Transit Node 2 Source 1 Destination 1 Destination 2 Source 2 Source 3 Transit Node 1 Transit Node 2 Source 1 Destination 1 Destination 2 Source 2 Source 3 Transient propagation in a transparent network Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  7. Dummy WDM comb Power monitor Switch 5% OXC providing back-up WDM signals • No need for complex O/E, fewer components • Using currently available signals in the OXC • Requires simple, commercial components • Replace all missing channels in one shot Fibre Fibre break break Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  8. Main Results • NOTE: we should soon test this scheme in the setup in slide 5 BER 10-1÷ 10-3 (mod 1kHz) Error FREE (mod 1kHz) Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  9. All-optical clock recovery over NRZ signals • Two step conversion: conversion to PRZ and combination of SOAs and FP-filter • Demonstrated at 40 Gb/s Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  10. Signal processing sequence • We report: a) input 40 Gb/s eye, b)PRZ, c) output from FPF, d) output clock Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004

  11. Planned activities • Demonstration of transient suppression via backup channels, assessing tolerances • System analysis of innovative components (wavelength converter, regenerators etc.) compatible with node architecture • Development of 3R regenerators, wavelength converters • Partecipation to joint activities with Partner 9 (and others?), possibly to demonstration activities Stockholm meeting - 2-3 Sept. 004
