  2. Takingthe first steps What is success? • Success is staying on course to your desired outcomes, and experiences, creating wisdom, happiness, & unconditional self worth along the way. Having potential doesn’t guarantee success, you have to work for it in order to achieve your goals. • Quality of our lives is determined by the quality of the choices we make on a daily basis. Successful people stay on course to their destinations by wisely choosing their beliefs and behaviors. • People with high self esteem know that no one is perfect. Successful people accept what cannot be changed. They take action to change negative habits into positive ones.

  3. Self Talk Which category are you in? Self talk determines the choices you make at each fork in the road, so kick the stinkin’ thinkin’! Notice inner critics, especially in bad situations. Raise your self esteem by: offering positive explanation of the problem, question importance of the problem, and offer evidence that your judgments are incorrect. • Inner Critic: a role that judges us as inadequate. Blames us for whatever goes wrong in life, and finds faults with anything about us. • Inner Defender: the flip side of the inner critic. Instead of judging ourselves, inner defender judges others. • Inner Guide: The best choice! The inner guide is a wise inner voice, making the best of any situation, and finding possible solutions for mistakes.

Wise Choice Process • The wise choice process will empower you to take full responsibility for creating your life as you want it to be despite the inevitable challenges life presents. • What’s My Present Situation?: Identify your problem and make it a creator outlook! • How would I like my situation to be?: Goals and future outcomes. • What are my possible choices?: Create a list of possible choices to your problem • Likely outcome of each choice: list outcomes to your list of choices. • Which choices will I commit to doing?: choose the best choices to the list to commit yourself to • When/How will I evaluate my plan?: Create a scheduled plan to give yourself goals with your situation.

Discovering Self Motivation V x E = M • (Values x Expectation = Motivation Scale yourself 1-10 )This concept says that your level of motivation in college is determined by multiplying your value score by your expectation score, to see how high your motivation score is. • Value isn’t found only in outcomes, it’s also found in experiences. Practice what you wish to be!

  6. How to set a goal • Heighten motivation that accompanies personal meaningful goals. Once you identify life roles, think of long term goals for each one. • Dated: Motivated goals have deadlines • Achievable: Motivating goals are challenging, but realistic. • Personal: Motivating goals are your goals, not someone else’s. • Positive: Motivating goals focus your energy on what you want rather than what you don’t want, such as distracting side projects. • Specific: Motivating goals state specific thought out plans, with measureable terms.

  7. Mastering Self Management Acting on Purpose: Do important actions before they become urgent. Harness the power of Quadrant II. QI: Not the best, and not the worst, people in this quadrant just need to work on a schedule to better their time. Q II: Best place to be, successful students rank in this quadrant. Q III and Q IV: Worst place to be, victims rank in these quadrants, and need to work on reaching Quadrant II

  8. Helpful Tips Get contact cards from students in all of your classes Seek help from instructors Create a project team Start a study group Manage your time wisely (with a schedule) Make goals Eat a healthy breakfast to keep motivated Take notes Study AND BE ON TIME 
