  4. Properties of Water • Water is the commonest substance on the surface of the Earth • It is essential to all life • Only 1% of the water supply here on Earth is suitable for drinking • Boiling point of pure water is 100° C • The freezing point of pure water is 0° C

  5. The Water Cycle • Three states; solid, liquid gas (ice, liquid water, water vapour) • Water; • Evaporates as steam from the sea, a lake or the ground • Forms steam • Rises up in the atmosphere • Forms clouds • Condensatesinto a liquid, semi-solid or solid again and falls down on Earth (as rain, hail or snow)

Chemical bonding in water • Covalent bonds between Oxygen and Hydrogen (sharing of electrons) • Hydrogen is a very funny element! • Creates negative and positive charges-just like a magnet! • This is called hydrogen bonding and makes the water molecules stick together. • The hydrogen bonds are responsible for surface tension in water.

Water treatment The different stages of water treatment • The water collects in a reservoir • A screen removes large objects, like bikes, mud, soil, stones and pieces of wood. • The water is then stored in a settling tank for a while in order for the smaller particles to fall to the bottom. • The water is then filtered through stones and sand in order to remove any remaining small particles. • In some countries, not in Sweden, the water is then treated with chlorine in order to kill bacteria-this happens by bubbling chlorine gas through the water. • The water is now ready to drink!!!
