  1. Stem Cells Shows Hope For Blood Cancer Patients Three complicated cases of Bone Marrow Stem Cell Disorders of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH) was cured by doctor s at Apollo Hospitals using the latest technology of stem cells. PNH is a type of cancer which originates in bone marrow, the soft, fatty tissues in the bone. It is lethal as it causes rapid destruction of red cells and has a meagre 8% survival rate, contracted at a probability of 1: 10,000. Mr Biswajit Saha, hailing from Assam was suffering from the same disease. He was diagnosed with Anaemia and showed symptoms of red colored urine. Misdiagnosed for liver ailment, his condition deteriorated over time. Additional heart and lung problems shackled his hopes. It was then when he approached the Apollo Hospital Hyderabad where the actual reason of his deficit health was found out. The only possible solution to PNH was a PNH transplantation, where bone marrow of a donor is infused into the patient’s body, which gives rise to healthy blood cells. The operation was conducted successfully and Biswajit is in best health and spirits. The second person to realize this deadly disease was Mrs. Kavitha, who was diagnosed with acute Myeloid and Acute Lymphoid Leukemia, manifesting simultaneously. This hit her body so hard that the initial doses of chemotherapy were proving futile. In order to prepare her for the ultimate bone marrow transplant, she was made on a nutritional diet to bring her body at par. The next big hurdle for the doctors was to find a perfect matching donor. They searched for Indian, American and German samples, but nothing matched her’s. They finally zeroed on a 90% match from Bangalore, and performed the

Number three patient to undergo Bone Marrow Transplant was Mrs. Prathima who was found to have Aplastic Anaemia. She had very less platelet count and patients like these have deteriorated immune system. Consequently, she had to for regular blood and platelet transfusions. The transplant was operated successfully on her as the doctor's found a perfect match in Germany. It was airlifted within 24 hours and now, Prathima shows no sign of major issues nor requires transfusion sessions. The doctors behind all these success stories are Dr Padmaja Lokireddy, Consultant Haemato oncology and Stem cell Transplant, Apollo Cancer Institute; Mr YSubramaniam, CEO and Dr Ravindra Babu, Medical Superintendent, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. Dr. Padmaja Lokireddy feels immensely proud of her team and marvels on these outcomes as they are at par with the global impetus of medical institutions. She is ready for bigger challenges and believes that Apollo Hospitals is the growing center of excellence for treating complex blood cancer ailments. Dr. Padmaja Lokireddy , Mr Y Subramaniam and Dr. Ravindra Babu highlight that bone marrow transplant is the cure for many blood related disorders.
