About ceth • Launched in 2006 • Funded by HEFCE grant of £4.5 million • Aims to concentrate upon the development of employability in UCLAN undergraduate students of non-vocational Humanities subjects • Achieves this aim by supporting innovative practice in teaching and learning; by developing research activity in the fields of employability and the humanities; by engaging employers as stakeholders in the centre and by encouraging them to play a part in the development of work-related learning practices.

  3. Unique teaching and learning spaces: Drama and Events Media Production Museums and Galleries Publishing House Retail Offer students the opportunity to explore and develop their own employability skills within a work-related environment. Realistic Work Environments

Some ceth Modules: • Managing an Arts Event • Community History Project • Exhibitions Project • Museum Heritage and History • Insight into Publishing • Working with English • Food Writing and Television • Introduction to Film Production • Managing an Art-House Cinema • Live Student Project • Professional Development and Career Planning for Humanities

  5. Engaging Employers 1: Museums and Galleries • Lancashire Museums Service identified as a key partner in the development of the RWE • Varied placement programme • Negotiated learning outcomes that suit the needs of both student and employer • Inclusive of employer input in placement aims

  6. Engaging Employers 1: Museums and Galleries • 2007 – 08: Placement at LMS (Ciara Donnelly) • Hilda Baker collection • Cataloguing • Photographing • Working with conservator at LMS Conservation Centre • Re-boxing the collection

Engaging Employers 1: Museums and Galleries • LMS: Ribble Steam Railway • Museums and Galleries RWE/ceth partner in bid for ‘Unleash the Power’ funding (collections) • Tutor input into project management team • Placement student(s) (Year 3) and Community History groups (Year 2) to develop museum exhibits and displays, educational resources, and visitor survey • Initial project ends May 2009

Engaging Employers 2: Media Production • ADI Communications: • ceth approached to find students to assist in editing and tape logging for a series of football DVDs. • Students gain valuable practical skills of media production and experience of working within a professional media environment • CSV Media • Students engaged in the marketing and exhibition of photographs • Students were required to submit CVs and attend an interview for this position • Gained experience of approaching local firms for pledges of support; creating and distributing marketing information; setting up exhibition; organising hospitality and taking orders for photographs.
