  1. TCC2/TDC2 LS1 Consolidation Plans Draft version for ENTM on 16.10.2012 and IEFC on 19.10.2012 http://cern.ch/tcc2tdc2WG On behalf of the TDC2/TCC2 WG team

  4. TDC2/TCC2 Consolidation WG • WG launched in October 2011, Chaired by Ilias. • Mandate • The recent failures of the equipment in the target caverns of the SPS North Area (TDC2 and TCC2) raise the awareness that there is a need for consolidation and for a critical look to the installed equipment and its maintenance procedures. • In the forthcoming 2011/2012 shutdown, the TAXs for at least the T2/H2,H4 and T4/H8,P4 beam lines must be repaired to allow normal operation of the lines for next year, and perhaps additional consolidation of vacuum, target systems and infrastructure in the caverns must be planned. • Status • TAXs repaired in April (T2, T4 and T6) but failure on spiral springs discovered recently, analysis in progress • Safety file about completed • Consolidation plan being fine-tuned • Report to IEFC on October 19th

  5. Long-lasting issue in TDC2: corrosion under stress of vacuum equipment • Corrosive liquid droplets seems to drop on the beam line and dig holes • Likely caused by • High humidity • High radiation levels • PVC in DC cables and other items • Cable trays just above the beam line • Current plan • Eradication of water leaks • Improvement of ventilation • Replacement of PVC cables • New engineering of critical areas

  6. Our plan for LS1 • Electricity • LV cabinet replacement • Groundloop upgrade • Renew Lights above XTAX and Targets • Implementsafetylighting • Re-route cabling in TDC2 and exchange cableswith PVC • Secondarybeamlines • Shielding modification • Survey of all beamlines • XTAX table second repair and upgrade • Collimators and targets • Monitor replacement • Mobile shieldingmotor exchange • TCSCexchange • Safety system upgrade according to safety file • Cooling and Ventilation • Controls Upgrade • Exchange of valves on Demin.& Chilledwater circuits • Chilled water pipe replacement (BA80/TCC2) • Vacuum • Damaged vacuum chambers & bellows replacement • Exchange and add ion pumps • Beam line protection system if no design change • Beam monitors • Magnets • Cooling flexibles replacement • Coolingpanoplyremovalfromcritical areas • Magnet support upgrade • Civil Engineering • Make roof and floor water tight as much as possible • Getrid of PVC tubes (drain network) • Corrective and preventive maintenance of drain network

  7. Planning: assomptions & contraints • Assumptions • T0: beam off: Feb 11th 2013. • Tf : restart of NA physics targeted for beginning of November 2014. • Constraints • RP requests 6 months cool down before short stay in TDC2/TCC2 (work preparation) and another 6 months cool down before longer intervention (work execution). • Dusty or tough activities (CE, new cable trays, water circuits) prior to new equipment installation. • Some co-activities are impossible (hot work, crane dependent, space consuming). • Hot work should be carried out at the very end of the access period. • Some groups (EN-CV and EN-EL) can start studies as of March 2014. Real work in the areas only after July 14. • Tf : 1 week contingency and 2 weeks for starting-up before restart of NA physics.

  8. Planning: option 1 • Postpone NA physics restart by another 3 months

  9. Planning: option 2 • Give priority to NA physics Proton and ion run

  10. WG Organization: reviews by equipment or infrastructure and by critical areas

  11. Support neededfrom EN • Resources: WG and integration meeting participants (especially the designers from EN-MEF, CV and EL in the 2 nextmonths) • WP’sdefinition: a templateisbeingprepared and willbecompleted by the WP holders

  12. SPARE SLIDES

  13. XTAX: spiral springfailure • 36 new spiral springsinstalled to allow the tables to beremotelyre-installed • Inspection on 15/08: 6 broken, 22 fine, 8 not visible • New design failed • On-site repairprocedureistricky and not ALARA • Failure mode analysis in progress(test bench in EHN1) • User’s informed on Thursday August 16th • Try to reduce use of tables with broken springs, and prefer the most reliable ones => interlock matrix modification • Try to avoid lower positions • Use table redundancy in case of trouble • Long term repair in LS1

  14. TCC2 Targets Target Box BAC TBIU Monitor TBID Monitor Mobile shielding motor Switchs Patch Panel Fan Courtesy of D. Grenier (EN-STI)

  15. Cabling campaign • Replace irradiated cables, avoid unnecessary cable length if possible, eliminate cable with PVC if possible • Cable campaign foreseen end of LS1 (after mid 2014) for 4 months • Only signal and control cables (not DC cables) between patch RAL and Patch RX • 700 cables = 100 km in TCC2/TDC2 for the time being • End user to fill a DIC if additional request Not possible during LS1 TCT: Top cable tray, AA: Almost All, R: Rest, Part: Partial.

  16. Air handling unit and cooling circuit • Leaking valve replacement foreseen in LS1 • North Area AHU consolidation planned for 2017 and cooling station for 2021 • AHU’s upgrade (add humidity control, make controls reliable) • Increase efficiency of air ventilation: at present the TDC2 tunnel is a dead-end and no clear air flow is set in the extremity toward TT20 (test in progress).

  17. List of activities for LS1: Magnet refurbishment • New cooling connection for all magnets • Global replacement of EPDM/Kevlar water hoses and gaskets in TDC2 / TCC2 • Y-shape fitting replacement by welded parts • Interlock: Thermometer and Manometer contacts get corroded, triggering inconsistent machine stops; • Insulation of cables is cracked in the patch panels, the magnet safety system could malfunction • Interlock systems will need consolidation in the future. A more modern system should be defined and implemented at the same time.

  18. Vacuum upgrade • Replace of damaged vacuum chambers and bellows • Replacement of ion pumps which are not or are poorly working at present. Change of ion pumps’ cables and connectors. • Increase of the number of pumps whenever possible and replacement of some ion pumps by new-generation NEG cartridges to accelerate recovery after air venting. • Beam line protection system in critical areas Courtesy of P. Chiggiato

  19. Lighting system and LV network • Lights upgrade (rad hard lights to be developed) • LV cabinet to be refurbished and moved away from targets and TAX areas

  20. Civil engineering • General infrastructure consolidation • Maintain drain network • Roof and floor cracks to be cured • Remove PVC hoses

  21. Beam line upgrade • Re-alignment of all secondarylines (neverdonesince installation mid seventies) • New PU-jacks for supportingbeamelements

  22. Use of TruView

  23. Beam monitors • A lot of beam monitors are corroded and must bechecked.
